When Craig arrived at the job site the next morning he was met with a stony stare from Tiffany. He wanted to talk to her but there were other pressing matters to see to - an unexpected leak in the roof and the discovery of old oak paneling below some horrendous wallpaper. Besides, when he came into the foyer where she was working, Tiffany was wielding a giant sledgehammer in a decidedly aggressive fashion.

Deciding that discretion probably was the better part of valor right then, Craig went to deal with the crisis that presented itself in the shape of work, not knowing that Tiffany was dealing with a crisis of her own.

She had just spent the most miserable night of her life. Steve and Caroline were not fools—something she would never have believed until the stunt they pulled the previous evening. Steve had the right to be in the house and in fact, if he left she stood a better chance of winning it in the divorce. But the same thing went for her, if she left, she might find herself paying for the two of them to live in the house that she had restored and spent a good chunk of her money and years on.

She could not force Caroline out, Steve had just as much right to invite people there as Tiffany did and he had claimed that Caroline was a tenant, which meant the only way to get her to leave would be a long and costly eviction process. The whole thing was maddening.

They had attempted to move into her bedroom but Tiffany had hurled their things out, slammed the door, and threatened to shoot them if they attempted to enter the room. When she had called her father, his advice had been to let them have the house and get out of it while she still could.

“I know it will hurt you financially but honey you could stay here with your mom and me. You will get back on your feet faster than you think, especially once you dump that man. He was always just a millstone around your neck, I am sorry to say that but I wish I had said it a lot sooner.”

“I am not leaving my house Daddy,” Tiffany had rejoined, which did not, despite her parents’ entreaties.

It was not just the money which she did not have, it was the principle of the thing. Steve had rarely worked and all of her extra time and money had gone into making that house a home. It had been a wreck when she had bought it—stripped bare by a previous owner who had been in foreclosure. She deserved that house, she had earned it, and her sense of fairness had been outraged.

Tiffany knew she was partly to blame for Steve’s attitude toward the house and her money. She had contributed to Steve’s sense of entitlement by never seeing just how little he contributed to the household. Swinging the sledgehammer into another
