“Devon, hey, you need to come drink something,” Matthews called to her, but his voice sounded far away.

“Huh?” She blinked her eyes open, unaware of how much time had passed. “What happened?” He had laid a blanket on top of her and folded her clothes neatly by her feet.

“Come on. Get up and dressed.”

“I’m achy all over.” Devon rubbed her forehead with one hand as she reached for her outfit with the other. Her mind felt foggy, and she took her time getting her clothes on.

“I’m sorry I didn’t ask for your permission.” He moved past her to the fridge, grabbed the orange juice, and fixed her a glass.

“Whenever I donate blood, I get cookies too.”

“I’m not in a joking mood.” He reached up into the cabinet, brought down a package of crackers, and handed it to her.

“Why are you on edge?” Devon took out a handful and began eating them.

“You stir up emotions I thought were gone. I gave into a part of me I don’t usually listen to, and I took what I wanted without asking. I’m very sorry.” He shook his head as if aggravated with himself.

“Did I do something to anger you?” She took a sip from the glass and watched him.

“No, you just asked a lot of questions I’m not used to answering.” He leaned back against the fridge. “I’m sorry I put you in such a position.”

“Did you think I would say no?” She downed the liquid and set the glass down carefully. “What is the real issue?”

“I didn’t consider your feelings at all… until you asked me to stop.”

“What do you mean?” She nibbled a cracker and studied his face as she chewed. What is he not telling me?

“You asked me if my actions were planned and if I meant to scare you.” He ran his hand through his hair. “I did what I wanted, and I didn’t give a damn about your feelings or the result.”

“Are you mad at me?” Devon felt her lower lip tremble as he moved his glass to the dishwasher, then approached her. She took several more crackers even though they tasted like cardboard and stuffed them in her mouth. She focused on chewing and swallowing instead of on the awkward silence as he stared at her.

“Am I mad at you? Devon, why would you think…?” Matthews sighed and shook his head again. “No, but you should be angry with me.”

“Well, I’m not, but I should get home.” What if he hadn’t stopped? “I’m not leaving for good,” she clarified. She grabbed her shoes, slipped them on, and walked slowly to the front door.

“Text me when you get home so I know you’re safe.” He leaned down to kiss her cheek then laid another on her forehead. “I do care very much about you.”

“I will and I know. I mean… I do too.” She hugged him quickly, turned, and rushed down the steps as fast as her current state would allow. If she kept her eyes on him she would not want to leave.
