Chapter 41:
TOM AND LIUâDAY 20âSEPTEMBER 2
It had been almost three weeks since the attack, and Tom was feeling much more himself now. The headaches had eased off, and if he took care to avoid straining his eyes, the flashes of light were much less frequent.
One advantage of being taken out of his ordinary life was that he had a forced quiet recovery period with no option of overdoing things. Dr. Anderson was pleased with his progress, and now instead of checkups, he had started coming over to play chess and even approved of Tom having a little Scotch the other night.
Liu had given approval for Tom to use his laptop but had cautioned against opening any sites where Tomâs identity could be tracked or someone could notice him logging into an account. It was driving Tom crazy not to know the status of things at work, given the impending board meeting, but there would be no point to the whole safe house strategy if Tom inadvertently undermined things by coming out of the shadows.
Tom was keen to meet with Liu this afternoon to get an update and see if staging his death had been productive. Liu arrived at the door just as Tom was lining up his arguments for coming back to life.
âFancy meeting you here,â Liu joked as Tom made him a coffee in the small kitchen of the safe house.
âHa, well, I have to tell you Iâm getting pretty sick of seeing the same four walls, and itâs a tough time not to be working with my team at Pellucid given whatâs going on with the business,â Tom said.
âI hear you, and I agree that we need to take stock and decide where we go from here,â Liu said.
âGreat!â Tom said.
He listened intently as Liu mapped out his latest findings, some of which were not easy for Tom to hear.
Liu first addressed Miriam, the additional life insurance she had purchased that summer, and the fact that she and Patrick McGowan were now together a great deal.
Tom shared with Liu that when he had signed the insurance documents, he had thought the coverage to be excessive given his and Miriamâs significant net worth. But he had signed because it seemed to make Miriam feel more independent.
As for Patrick having surfaced, Tom attributed Patrickâs involvement with Miriam as the actions of a concerned friend looking out for her.
Liu had no recourse but to tell Tom police had seen Patrickâs car parked at Miriamâs house the past two nights.
âIâll spare you the photos from our investigator, but thereâs no question that Miriam and Patrick are together,â Liu said.
Tom took a long pause and then said dryly, âThat was quick. Less than three weeks. Must be some kind of rebound record.â
âIâm sorry, Tom,â Liu said, feeling bad for his friend.
Liu then brought Tom up-to-date on forensics that had netted very little. While he had some suspicions, there was still nothing definitive to go on.
âWith you supposedly dead, it impedes the investigation somewhat.
