“No, Ben and I are on our way to the airport. We’ve had this holiday plan for several weeks now. He and I go to New York every year to shop and catch a few plays. Ronnie usually goes to a very nice hotel as a gift from us to get pampered and relax. While we’re all gone, the decorators come in and do up the whole house for the holidays. She didn’t tell you?”
“No, she didn’t. When does this start? I’m assuming sometime soon.” He was beginning to see why she was sad. Alone and hurt was not a good start to a pamper session.
“We’re actually debating on whether we should continue on to the airport. I want you to know that we aren’t asking you to babysit for us. We would like to know if you’d just, I don’t know, just check up on her for us a couple of times?
We’ll be back on Sunday night. So it wouldn’t be all that long, really.”
“You have a good time, Austin. I’ll take care of her. I’m going to tell...let me rephrase that, I’m going to see if she’ll come to my house with me.” He knew better than to assume anything or to order her around. She may be hurt right now, but he was sure she could peel a strip off of him wider and quicker than his mother.
“All right. I appreciate this. I guess Ben was right. You aren’t so bad after all.”

Ronnie was lying back in the chair when Devin returned with the nurse and the wheelchair. She groaned, but knew that it was hospital policy to have the patient leave this way. Devin looked distracted, but he smiled at her. She started to lean down and tie her other shoe when he was suddenly in front of her patting his thigh. She lifted her foot so that he could tie it for her.
“Are you hungry? I am, starved actually. How about I take you to breakfast before I take you home? We could get something really fattening.” He wiggled his brows at her and she burst out laughing.
“All right, but I’m not really very hungry. I...my head hurts a bit and I have a prescription to fill too.” Her head actually pounded, but she thought if she said that, they would make her stay.
“Sure. Let’s get you in the car; I only have about three more minutes before the security guard said he’d tow me.”
By the time they got to the car, Ronnie was slightly nauseous. She closed her eyes against the moving walls and pressed her hand hard against her belly. She thought about begging the nurse to hit her over the head so that she would not have to see.
She stood up next to his open car door and he pulled her into his arms.
Nothing had ever felt that good before. She laid her head on his shoulder and started to cry softly.
