“You see,” the old man said. I always hated when the old man told me that I saw. Because I didn’t fucking see, not once. But he would start out that way. “You see …” And then he’d go on to tell me how the world was. “I never really loved your mother. You have to understand about women, well … they start out one way and they end up another. Your mother was an angel when I met her. Now …”

“That’s because you’re a sick rapist fuck and you’ve twisted her. She was never meant to be what you made her, you bastard. If she’d met a decent man, she never would’ve ended up this way. She would’ve been good. She’d be like one of those women in a commercial. Fuckin’ baking cakes.”

I didn’t say that, not really. But then I’m not really there. I’m strung up in a room covered in blood. Or maybe the room’s not covered in blood. Maybe the blood’s just dripping down my face, making it look like the room’s covered in blood. A beating’ll do a lot of strange things to a man, but it’s hard to see how they could’ve painted the damn room in blood. Apart from the blood, there are folk about, with Kirk standing in the middle. He’s stripped down to some baggy shorts, his skinny torso as drenched in blood as everything else. But that’s my blood, not the blood in my eyes. His knuckles, his damn knuckles.

“Why did you do this?” The old man laughs at me. “You gave yourself up, for what? For what? You fucked some girl at a lake. She’s got a nice tight cunt and you like the way she looks when she squirts on your prick.”

“You’re a fuckin’ dog,” I spit. “You’re a fuckin’ dog …”

Kirk chuckles. Maybe he reckons I’m speaking to him. Dammit, maybe I am.

“A dog?” the old man whispers, shaking his head. “I gave you everything.”

“A dog?” Kirk paces over to me. Shaking his head. “I’ll take everything from you. I’ll take your damn soul, bastard.” He hits me twice in the side, in almost the exact same spot where he hit me before. I don’t look down; don’t wanna see that bruise. I bet it’s like the sun, a goddamn red sunset overlaying my tattoos. “Just tell me what you know, Butcher. It’s not a difficult request. Even a dumb pig like you should be able to do that. Just open those lips and tell me what you know and I won’t have to give you anymore drugs. Or do you want more? Is that it?”

Drugs? I blink slowly. Shit, I remember … something, an injection? I try’n find the place on my body where they injected, but there’s too much fire everywhere. Finding one single flame is too hard.

“Fuck you,” I growl, aiming it at the old man. “You never gave me shit.”

“No,” Kirk answers. His face keeps appearing and disappearing in front of Dad’s. “But it’s not me who has to do the giving, Butcher.
