CHAPTER 28

Brunelle stormed off the elevator and headed straight for Duncan’s office. Carlisle shared the elevator ride but didn’t seem to be trying to keep up with him. That was just as well. He didn’t really want her to be a part of the confrontation that was about to happen, but he didn’t tell her to wait outside either. She wasn’t really one to be told what to do. Then again, neither was Duncan, but there they were.

“Is he in there?” Brunelle asked Duncan’s personal assistant, even as he strode past her desk without breaking stride.

“He’s on the phone,” she responded. “You can’t go in there.”

“It’s okay.” Brunelle grabbed ahold of the door handle. “I’m pretty sure he’s expecting me.”

Brunelle pushed open the door and marched inside.

Duncan was at his desk, leaning back in his chair, phone to his ear. When he saw Brunelle, he sat up again. “I’m going to need to call you back,” he said into the receiver, then hung it up. “Dave, how nice of you to barge in announced.”

“It’s my case, Matt,” Brunelle fairly barked. “You gave me thirty days to pin another murder on Kincaid, and I did it. You can’t accept their offer.”

Duncan nodded slowly. “First of all, I absolutely can accept their offer. I’m the Elected Prosecutor and your boss. Second, why didn’t you tell me there was a new offer on the table?”

“Because I already rejected it,” Brunelle answered. “There was no need to get you involved.”

“I beg to differ,” Duncan responded. He stood up and walked around to lean on the front of his desk. Brunelle was still standing by the door, back straight and fists clenched. “I said you could reject his first offer if you found a second murder. I didn’t say anything about subsequent offers. You should have come to me.”

“What did you tell her?” Brunelle demanded.

“Who? Edwards?” Duncan clarified.

“Yes. What did you tell her? Gwen and I just won the motion to join the cases for trial. Don’t tell me that was all for nothing.”

“I told her I’d think about it,” Duncan answered. “And congratulations on winning the motion.”

“I don’t want your congratulations, Matt,” Brunelle said. “I want you to back me up. I want you to tell Edwards no.”

“I’m not sure no is the right answer, Dave,” Duncan replied. “Even if you did win your motion to join. There are a lot of factors to consider.”

“And none of them compare to putting a serial killer away for the rest of his life,” Brunelle shot back. “That’s the only thing that matters, Matt.”

Duncan frowned slightly and pointed at Brunelle. “Yes, but are you sure you can do that?”

“I’m sure I’ll do everything I can,” Brunelle offered. “And so will Gwen.”

“I know that already, Dave,” Duncan responded. “Hell, I’d be disappointed with anything less. But it may not be enough.”

“Don’t take the offer, Matt,” Brunelle pleaded. “Just don’t.”

“Or else what?” Duncan challenged his subordinate.

Brunelle thought for a moment before going ahead and saying it. “Or else I’ll quit.
