The Knights dragged him into the cell, a room with nothing but two chairs and a stained wooden table in the middle. The breaks between the soundproof pads on the walls were made of the same white bricks as the hallway, only these were stained with the dark maroon of dried blood. Woods sat across from him as the other Knights clasped handcuffs around his wrists behind the chair. Blood seeped down his forehead and onto his cheeks. Corman tasted copper.

“The great thing about idiots is that they’re predictable,” Woods told him. “And there’s no bigger idiot than you.”

Even through his swollen eyes, he could make out the gilded white and gold inlay of Lancelot’s armor, the only set in the department besides King’s made to be completely bulletproof, fire retardant, and shock absorbent. A useless cloak was attached at the gorget and hung down to the knees. It was supposed to be for ceremonial purposes, but Woods always wore it, even to something as degrading to his office as this. He had to make sure everyone and their mother knew who he was, and what his daddy had accomplished for him.

Kyle Woods was a legacy; his father had been the Lancelot before Sasha. And for those twenty-five years, Kevin Woods became synonymous with terror. Wearing that pristine white armor in his equally white and equally pristine cruiser, the senior Woods spent his days beating cambions, addicts, prostitutes, African Americans, Mexicans, Native Americans, poor whites, and everyone else he didn’t like within an inch of their lives. Some had criminal records. Some were reported as resisting arrest. Some were suffering from delusions and paranoia. Some had their full mental capabilities.

Most of them died. By getting their brains bashed in, by getting fifteen bullets in the chest, by suffocating underneath his poleyn. The department was immensely proud of him; he was their trusted public affairs spokesperson. To allay any concerns regarding another dead body made at their hands. It never mattered the vic, nor the cause of death. They had deserved it, and the Knight in question was doing everything in their power to keep the city safe from people like them. When one of the victims who sued him actually managed to win their case, Kevin Woods was arrested for aggravated assault. A day later, soon after his bail was posted, he was found dead in his cell, which he had shared with five cambions. All five were later tried and executed for first degree murder. Corman, of course, reviewed the case. None of the testimonies added up, none of the facts presented to the judge withstood any amount of scrutiny. It was the fifth case like that just that month, only difference was this one had a renowned Knight on the docket.

Now his son, one of his five lovely white children, sat before Corman wearing not only the armor but the same self-satisfied grin.

“You had to know this is what would happen if you showed your face around here again,” Woods said.
