Chapter 11

Claire woke up in his arms. The sunlight poured in through the window, making the bedroom seem to sparkle. This was probably the first time she had woken up before he did. Fletcher was typically such an early riser, but their lovemaking had likely exhausted him.

Smiling to herself, Claire leaned forward to kiss his forehead and slowly inched towards the edge of the bed.

She couldn’t actually remember if she had observed him asleep before. Fletcher was always so animated. As aloof as he was, there was an energy to him. He was always ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice. Now, though? He was fast asleep, his broad chest rising and falling steadily. That chiseled face now so relaxed that he looked positively tranquil. Instead of the growly, surly man she knew him to he, Fletcher appeared boyish. Gazing at him while he slept made her heart flutter.

Finally, she carefully slipped out of the bed and stepped into the bathroom to take a shower. A hot blast of water warmed her skin, and her thoughts started drifting to memories of last night. Going to dinner with him had been wonderful. Thank goodness she had packed an appropriate dress. She hadn’t thought they would go to a fancy restaurant, but Claire always tried to be prepared. And he had liked the dress. The way he had stared at her all evening had confirmed it. Which was why she had agreed to take this break with him in the first place.

Whenever the grief struck her, Fletcher was always there for her. Yet he also knew when to give her the space she needed. He didn’t stifle her. Didn’t patronize her. When finding Neal’s letter had pushed her over the edge, he had wisely suggested a break. The very thing she hadn’t even realized she needed. It was like he knew her better than she knew herself sometimes, and that made her feel like she was dancing on air.

Done with the shower she brushed her teeth, got dressed, and snuck out of the bedroom. She made herself a cup of tea and went out onto the balcony to take in the view. The cityscape was so different from the view of the flat, clear blue bay that she was accustomed to. Here, the world was gleaming towers and glittering skyscrapers. Cars whizzed by on the street below and the city seemed to buzz with an energy she hadn’t felt in a long time. It should have been overwhelming, but it wasn’t. She had grown up in New York after all, so she was used to the rhythm of city life. The chaos and the movement all around her was strangely comforting.

Once she was finished drinking her tea she headed into the living room to order room service. It would be good to share breakfast with Fletcher. Having breakfast together was becoming something of a daily ritual, and she couldn’t imagine going about her day without it.

Room service arrived just as Fletcher stepped out of the bedroom.
