The greatest strength of a people-centered leader is the ability to translate employee potential into products and services that add value. People-centered leaders are good judges of talent and excellent mentors. They can create climates where employees want to do their best. They empower others. People-centered leaders are present oriented, i.e., they focus on what they can do in the present that will prepare employees for the future.
People-centered leaders may focus on the few with talent, while neglecting other members of the team. They may be overly optimistic about peopleâs motivation and desire to improve. Subordinates might see them as too critical, or as leaders that take too long to make decisions.
I believe Jaime Escalante and Shonda Rhimes are people-centered leaders because they focus on coaching and developing those around them as the path to success. Escalante was a famous educator known for teaching calculus at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles. He proved that inner-city students could excel given the right support. Rhimes guides teams of writers and production staff to create television shows like Greyâs Anatomy, Private Practice, and Scandal.
Flat-Profile Leaders
While most people have a strong preference for one style, there are a few who show no single strong preference. I call these people flat-profile leaders. The strengths of a flat-profile leader are the ability to be flexible and adaptable. If the leader can recognize the type of leadership style that would be most effective in a given situation, she or he has the ability to mirror that style.
The downside of a flat-profile leader is difficulty building an effective team or inner circle. Having a strong leadership preference makes it easier to see your deficiencies and pick leaders who are strong where you are weak. The other potential problem is effectively communicating which style you are employing at a given time. The risk is that others working with you will think your style is inconsistent. Team members might have a hard time deciphering your true desires.
Combinations
Some people have a single strong preference and one other moderate or strong preference. Those with a combination of preferences bring strong and unique abilities to their leadership role. Understanding these distinct abilities is key to building an effective inner circle or senior management team.
Vision/Customer Combination (VC)
Characteristics of the VC leadership combination are a broad, strategic view and the ability to solve customer problems. This combination is ideally suited for entrepreneurs.
A vision-centered leader sees more than others see, sees farther than others see, and sees before others do. The VC leader uses this ability to develop creative solutions to business problems. A customer-centered leader becomes an expert at understanding their customersâ business. They use this deep customer knowledge to create products and services that will meet customersâ current and unrecognized needs.
VC leaders are uniquely able to be good entrepreneurs because they concretely marry their ability to anticipate future trends and insights with specific customer needs. In other words, they naturally see the creation of new market space.
