Hawaiian Elixir (a.k.a. Pineapple Water)

Makes 4 cups

This flavorful water is a dieter’s dream: spicy, slightly sweet yet sugar free, and highly diuretic. Use it as the base for smoothies, or make it without the spices and grab a glass whenever you’re thirsty to replace regular water (those who claim they don’t drink water because it’s tasteless will be thankful for this recipe). This is a great way to use pineapple peels instead of throwing them away.

1 organic pineapple (skin only)

1 cinnamon stick

4 allspice berries

2 cloves

5 cups water

Clean the pineapple peel by scrubbing it with a brush under hot running water.

Combine the pineapple peel, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and 5 cups water in a saucepan.

Bring to a boil over medium heat and simmer for about 30 minutes. Turn off the heat and cool.

Strain, discarding the solids. Transfer the pineapple water to a jar and keep refrigerated or at room temperature.

Forget sugary drinks or artificially flavored water. When cooking corn, save the water and drink it during the day for a diuretic effect. The cooking water of potatoes is traditionally used for kidney problems, particularly for stones or sediments. Mix and match these with fruits and spices to create your own trademark drinks.
