THIRTY-FOUR

There was a dark blue Buick sitting next to the Cedar Cliffs station when I left that night to meet Mark Ellis at The Beach House.

I noticed it because you don’t see many cars that big on Martha’s Vineyard. I didn’t pay much attention to it then. But I noticed it again in my rear-view mirror once I pulled out of the station parking area and began driving down the road along the ocean toward The Beach House. That’s when I began watching it carefully.

Of course, it could have just been another driver headed toward The Beach House or somewhere else south on the island.

But I was suspicious of the timing.

I kept glancing in the rear-view mirror at the Buick, which was staying behind me, moving at the same speed I was.

Just when I was considering whether I should make a turn off on one of the side roads to see if the Buick turned too and followed me, it changed its pattern on me and disappeared from the spot it had been in my rear-view mirror.

Instead, the driver had now speeded up and was passing me on the left side.

I slowed a bit to let the Buick get by and then watched its taillights disappear on the road in front of me.

But not for long.

A few hundred yards further down, I saw it parked along the side of the road. Its warning indicators were flashing so I couldn’t miss it. I was pretty sure now the Buick had been following me ever since I left the station house. And whoever was driving the Buick was waiting for me up ahead.

I pulled my car up behind it, took out my gun and pointed it toward the vehicle as I approached it.

“I’m a police officer!” I announced in a loud voice.

There was no response from inside the Buick.

“Step out of the car and show me your hands,” I said.

The door on the driver’s side opened now, and a man stepped out. He had his hands in the air. At first, I couldn’t see his face clearly. But, once I did, I recognized him right away. It was the security guy from Albert Ruggerio’s house.

“You were following me,” I said to him.

“Yes, I was.”

“Not a very good job of it.”

“What do you mean?”

“That’s one of the worst tails I’ve ever seen. I picked it up right away. You couldn’t have been more obvious.”

“That’s because I wanted you to see me.”

“Why?”

“We need to talk, Detective.”

“About what?”

“Can I put my hands down now?”

I nodded.

“And our conversation would be more comfortable if you weren’t pointing that weapon at me while we talked.”

I put my gun back in the holster and walked over to him.

“What do we have to talk about?” I asked.

“You need to stop harassing, Mr. Ruggerio.” he said. “Sitting outside his house like you just did – or trying to talk to him. He knows nothing about these murders you’re investigating or the girls who are missing. There is no reason for you to question him, and I cannot continue to allow you to keep trying.
