CHAPTER 7
They came to the first beach where Sawyer was stationed as a lifeguard and were surprised even this late in the evening it was still bustling with tourists. But this was a beach they'd both seen already so they kept going until they arrived at a lesser used piece of the shore that also contained a lighthouse, which now served as a gift shop. The lady running the place told them the best sunset was at the Blueberry Cliffs Overlook, another half mile down the road. They hurried off to make it there in time.
Pulling up and parking, the views alone were magical, with or without the sunset. It was a steeper, elongated rocky shoreline that eventually disappeared into the crashing waves far below. And there were a few tourists milling about and soaking up the views.
Sawyer and Beau both spotted the perfect location where they could sit on the rocks, lean back, and watch the sun as it slid down over the horizon. Sawyer almost got daring enough to grab Beau's hand to lead him there, but a twinge of fear held him back when he spied another young couple casting looks in their direction.
Fleeting looks, Sawyer told himself, because they were the two new people arriving. It was normal behavior and that's all. But it was a public place, and as much as he didn't care about being seen holding a man's hand in public, that nagging worry refused to relent. The one that warned him there would be consequences after. That it might be dangerous, not just for him, but Beau too.
He sucked in and realized he'd stopped and Beau had his hand gently on his arm.
"What just happened?"
Sawyer did a quick gaze around and tried to shake himself out of the funk. Even though it felt like it, no one was even giving them a second look or care.
"I'm fine."
Beau's gaze called bullshit, but it wasn't clear whether he'd guessed Sawyer was having a moment of panic over a possible public display of affection. He followed Beau to the spot they'd picked out and claimed a seat on the rock next to him.
Sawyer leaned his head back and scrunched his features, worried he'd offended Beau already, by his inability to be open in public. All the advice he'd been given was swarming his brain and before he could overthink it, he blurted out the words, "My mother died when my youngest brother Simon was born. My father was an asshole before that, but after, even more so."
He opened his eyes which he'd squeezed shut, like somehow that would make him braver. But he was pleased to see when he did that Beau was peering patiently at him as if encouraging Sawyer to continue, but not in any pushy way.
He fidgeted, trying to find the right words to explain.
"My father recentlyâdied." Killed, by his son's own hands, but he wasn't ready to explain that part yet.
"Somehow, I have a feeling there wasn't much love lost?" Beau guessed.
