Chapter 4

Cory woke to find herself exactly where Edmund had left her overnight, her body bruised and bloody. Pain overpowered her as her mind raced trying to understand what had happened and why. For the life of her, she could not comprehend why he had snapped but she knew one thing—thoughts of leaving him became stronger. She’d been warned years before to be careful who she committed to because of her natural submissiveness and she’d done exactly what Al had warned her against—she’d gone into this commitment without thinking.

Memories of Al Hart came back to her, easing her physical pain. Why now after nearly twenty years does he have such an effect on my life? Simple, stupid, you’re still in love with him.

Tears ran down her face remembering their break-up. As her master, he saw it as the best solution—long-distance relationships for the most part did not work, especially in their world. Normal couples stood better chances of lasting than Dom/subs, the need disappearing because of distance or it became overwhelmingly greater. Either way, he felt permanent separation would be better.

She’d kept up with him as best she could over the years, knowing he’d graduated at the top of his class at Harvard then becoming a very successful lawyer living in Washington. Until last night, she thought she’d had an extremely good life but obviously not—not like Al.

Cory froze when the door opened, her master standing in the doorway, the cane in his hand.

“Well, are you going to tell me who this new master of yours is? Why did you betray me?”

Again, she tried to tell him the truth but the rage had yet to subside. Edmund had a look in his eyes she’d never seen before, terror overwhelming her when he came near her.

“You’ve humiliated me, slave. Because of you, I have to face him tonight—a man I don’t know but who obviously knows you quite well. Well, my dear, he’ll get you after I’m done with you and I hope he sees you for what you are—a disloyal slave who betrays her master after she gets what she wants from him.”

Shaking her head, she tried to plead with him but he refused to listen. Suddenly, she felt his hand on her neck, his grip tightening seconds before he ripped her collar—the thick gold chain she’d worn for over a year—off her. She felt blood running down her back from where the clasp ripped across her skin, Cory screaming.

Once more, Edmund punished her for her supposed betrayal and once more, she lapsed off, her last thought of a boy from high school—the only man she ever loved.

Al arrived at the club early, needing to discuss the evening’s event with George.

“Tell me exactly how the rite, as you call it, happens.”

“First, her master will take her into the room and put her on display on the altar. Usually, slaves are restrained—symbolic of the fact they no longer have the protection of their masters and to keep them from running.
