CHAPTER 3

The sun was sinking lower and lower, and it was an hour ride by boat. The crew was a stiff and silent sort of restless waiting to break free the closer they got to their destination.

Dom was driving the boat. And his bear brothers, Derek and Damien were a formidable force that reeked of don't fuck with me. And Dani was never so happy to be traveling with three men who might normally scare the living shit out of her seeing as they were heading into a fight and the bears were three trained fighting machines.

They were half afraid Sawyer might jump overboard and opt to swim to shore as they began to slow, the boats approach too damn slow for his liking.

Hal and Chris were focused—on each other more than the ride or the destination. It was hard to blame them, being newly found mates and all. Not that being enamored with each other stopped even after months of being mated. And everyone was grateful of their willingness to stick around and help when this wasn't their fight. But both Hal and Chris were just as grateful to have had help when they needed it most and were not about to abandon their new friends when they needed help most.

Something Dani was experienced with first hand as she squeezed her mate's hand and he squeezed right back, a silent resolve passing between them. An equal give and take of each other's strength and determination, and immense gratitude for each person braving this battle alongside them.

It was only a minute later that a distant and dark shadow lifted up over the Atlantic—Meena's island fort. The boat slowed, the shifters using their senses to sniff the air and listen for any signs of movement, or a trap lying in wait.

They didn't dare use magic yet, for fear it might trigger some secret alarm.

Other than the waves tickling the side of the boat and a few stray seagulls flapping or crying in the air, it was ominously quiet. And that's when Dani's witch mark sizzled in some kind of silent warning. It was hidden under her clothes and armored vest, but she imagined it was burning brightly.

"What?" Galen whispered, from close by.

"Not sure." She let her eyes adjust and scanned the land they were nearing, but other than a few torches in the distance, there was no movement. Dani sighed. She had no idea why she knew it, but something was off. It was like a knowledge that attached to her very spine.

So what was causing this feeling?

Just her gut, freaking out? A premonition of some kind?

Paranoia, more like...

And yet all her witchy senses were on overload. They were not telling her to flee, however, only that something was very wrong.

"It's gotta be a trap," she muttered.

"We already suspected as much," reminded Galen.

"No. It's—something more than that." Her witchy senses were tingling something fierce. Perhaps it was just the dark magic they were so perilously close to.

"Should we abort?" questioned Damien.

Dani's mind raced, trying to make a choice.
