Chapter Three

Lord have mercy, they were out of everything. Everything. Potatoes. Eggs. Flour. Milk. Oliver tried not to panic, because that way led to madness, but gracious they needed food.

Oliver bumped hips with Banger. “Four people eat way more than one, you know?”

“Four times as much, huh?”

“Yeah. Or is it three times, since there’s three more of us?”

“But four times one is four.” Banger grinned a little, looking far better than he had only hours ago. God, so much had happened so fast.

“So if I eat one apple and you ate an apple…” Math confused him.

“Then Arturo eats three apples and Mik eats all the grapes and some cheese.”

Oliver chortled. “Which leaves us dragon kibble.”

“Yeah. Not the most tasty, Ollie-man. Not for humans.”

“They like it. How do you feel about spaghetti and red sauce and garlic toast?” Oliver glanced sideways at Banger, who was scooping out dragon meals. Again. All of the babies seemed to be eating more, storing energy.

“Works for me. I’m going to have to go out in the morning and buy supplies, Ollie-man. We’re not going to make it much longer.” Banger sounded so matter of fact.

Yeah, he knew. He just worried. Lots. Banger was their usual supply guy, so he was the logical choice. Still, things were so up in the air…

“We’ll make a list. Are you okay, honey?” Oliver didn’t want weirdness, and Banger wouldn’t quite meet his eyes.

“It’s all new and I’ve been wanting for a long, long time.” Banger’s cheeks flamed.

“I know.” Oliver kinda felt bad about that. He went to Banger and wrapped him in a hug. “I mean, I know that now. I just -- there was nothing but the babies. It’s almost like I’ve freed up all this space inside me since all of you came.”

“You just needed a nap,” Banger teased, but they held on to each other.

“Maybe. I can hear things now. Turquesa and Azul -- they’re louder now, even than before. Sunny and Frank are a whisper because they have you.” He thought that would make him sad, but it just gave him this immense sense of satisfaction.

“They do. They’re amazing, aren’t they?” Banger’s expression softened immediately with the love only dragons could inspire.

“They are. I think our wee Indi and Skye will be Daniel’s when he wakes up enough to bond.”

“Yeah. Are we keeping him, too?” Banger asked, brows pulling down a tiny bit.

“We’d need a bigger place.” Oliver felt for Daniel’s mind with his, and while he could hear Indi and Skye, Daniel was like a block of ice. “I think he’ll be going somewhere else.”

“Where?” Banger’s eyes went huge. Yeah, the idea of Indi and Skye leaving pulled at his heart.

“Who knows? The babies will let us know.”

“That doesn’t freak you out?”

Oliver shrugged off his sadness. “They’re dragons, honey. I don’t own them. I want them to find their bonded and live long, long lives.”

His job was to guard them, raise them, love them. They would never leave him completely. Oliver knew that. He would hear them anywhere in the world.
