The smooth click of the front door wakes me. Quiet feet shuffle outside my bedroom door. I rub my eyes, hand searching the empty pillow next to mine. I donât remember much from last night. Matt swirled spaghetti onto my fork and fed me, kissing my sauced lips with a glint in his eye. I vaguely recall being tucked against him as he walked me to the bedroom. My eyes were so heavy I could barely hold them open. He curled up next to me, and I succumbed to the fatigue.
The knob of my bedroom door turns slowly, the wood drifting open to reveal Matt, bare-chested. Getting my eyes to cooperate, I scan the lower half of him. A pair of old blue sweatpants cover his legs. He must have found those in my closet, leftovers from the past that I never got rid of. Warren isnât the first thing I want on my brain when I wake up, and I donât want to see his clothes on my current boyfriend.
Looking away from Matt, I stretch my arms above my head. âWhat have you been sneaking around doing?â
âContemplating how beautiful you are in the mornings.â
âOnly in the mornings?â I wiggle back into the comfort of the warm sheets. âWhat time is it?â
He crosses to the other side of the bed and slides under the sheets, body scooting over to hold me against the smooth skin of his chest. âYouâre beautiful every second of the day. And itâs still early. Beth needed me to move my car or I wouldnât be out of bed yet.â
His lips graze along my neck and I turn my face into the muscle just below his collar bone. Iâm not kissing him until Iâve brushed my teeth. My mouth feels like sewage. âWhy is Beth out of bed so early?â
His teeth scrape over my shoulder. âShe said sheâs going by your parentsâ place before work. Something about the family having a plan to help Gary?â
âThey couldnât help themselves out of wet paper bag.â
He nips my earlobe. âI can help you out of that shirt.â
I move away from him and pull the sheets up to my neck, an ache beginning to thud at the base of my skull. Probably because heâs wearing Warrenâs clothes. âNot right now. I feel like Iâve been chewed up by a lawn mower.â
He leans on the headboard, tucking one arm behind his head and using the other to bring me back to rest against him. âStress is wearing you down, babe. You went out like a light last night. I barely got a goodnight kiss.â
âSorry. Itâs justâ¦this situation with Gary is a nightmare.â
His thumb kneads the soft flesh of my neck. âYouâve got a lot on your mind right now. I totally understand that. And Iâm here for you. I just need you to give me the chance to be.â
I close my eyes, breathe him in, and want nothing more than to stay right here. âOnce Garyâs out of jail, Iâll have more time.
