Chapter Four

This was not good. Derick had been so happy and relieved to see Nate appear at his cell door. He had thought he was safe, that he would avoid the punishment Alpha Erskine was planning for him, but now he was even more scared than before because not only was he scared for himself, but also, and maybe more, for Nate.

Derick didn’t know if Nate had told the truth when he’d said his Alpha didn’t know he was here, but even if Dominic did know, he wouldn’t be able to do anything to help them. Nate had broken the unwritten law that no one could trespass in an Alpha’s territory without authorization. Punishment was decided by the Alpha, and while Dominic had ignored the way Derick had broken the rule, he knew Alpha Erskine would have no problems punishing Nate. He was going to use both of them as examples.

Derick and Nate had been separated, Derick being thrown once again in the small cell he’d been in from the beginning, and when the door opened he knew he was in trouble. It was too early in the morning for his punishment and there was no way Nate would have been able to come and rescue Derick once more, so it seemed that Alpha Erskine had decided to give Derick a more private punishment.

Derick’s heart sank when he saw who the man at the door was. Lucius was part of the Alpha’s inner circle, which meant that he was one of those who administrated punishments and basically did what they wanted to whom they wanted and when they wanted to, unless the Alpha forbade it. Not everyone in Derick’s old pack was corrupted and immoral, but everyone in the inner circle definitely was.

Lucius had wanted Derick for years, since Derick had been a teenager, but it was forbidden for two men to have sex in this pack, so he’d never acted on it. He had cornered Derick more than once, though, especially when he was younger, and had touched him some, but Lucius knew that the Alpha wouldn’t have wanted a member of his inner circle to be corrupted, and he was afraid Derick would talk. It looked like Alpha Erskine was making an exception, though, and Derick knew what was going to happen to him. He wasn’t strong enough to win a fight against Lucius, but he would go down trying. No one was going to take what was Nate’s alone without Derick fighting back. Getting up, Derick glared at the man in front of him, taking in the dirty brown hair and the glassy eyes, and—ugh. From the smell, Lucius hadn’t bathed in a while.

“Well, well, look what the cat dragged in,” Lucius sneered.

Derick snorted in answer. “Really, you don’t have anything better than a bad joke? I should be scared of you, not wanting to laugh in your face.” Okay, so maybe it wasn’t smart to antagonize the bastard, but Derick couldn’t help the fact that when he was scared his mouth moved on its own.
