Phillip Clarke watched Kelly go, then closed his office door. He shook a Marlboro out of the pack in his desk and lit it, inhaling deeply. To hell with the building’s no-smoking policy.

He walked around the office, stopping at his shelf of wood carvings. He picked up the one of the horse and rider and ran a hand across the surface, feeling the tiny intricacies of the rider’s face, the separate strands of the horse’s tail. It had taken him nearly a year of nights and weekends to do this one. His boss, the political-appointee U.S. Marshal, fancied himself an art connoisseur and had told him such a piece would be worth several thousand dollars in a gallery.

Clarke closed his hand over the carving and carried it back to his desk. He centered it in front of him and stared at it from all angles while he smoked the cigarette down to the filter. He would spray some air freshener around later. The marshal was a fanatical antismoker. Goddamn politicians.

Goddamn that little Art Dorian. And goddamn Kelly. They shouldn’t have let women into the Marshals Service in the first place, especially one like Kelly. Cop’s kid, trying to prove a point. But he couldn’t tell anyone that, not anymore. Not in this era of “sensitivity training.”

When he picked up the carving again, Clarke noticed that his hand was trembling ever so slightly.

“Stop that shit,” he said.

With his other hand, he picked up the phone and punched in a local number. A moment later he said, “She’s off the case. I don’t think she’ll do anything else. She’s young and ambitious and doesn’t want to screw up her whole career. Besides, she’s scared of me.”

“That’s good,” the Whispering Man said. “She was useful for a while, but after this morning, I believe things can move forward without her now.”

“I got her to give me the files, just in case.”

“There shouldn’t be anything in the official reports.”

“Can’t be too careful. If you’re going through with this, don’t be careless.”

“I’m not worried about that anymore,” the Whispering Man said.

“Well, I sure as hell am. It’s a little different for me than it is for you.”

“So it is.” There was a click and the line went dead.

Clarke put the phone down, leaned back in his chair, and ran his hands over the horse and rider again.
