At the Ovingham ball, Emma was frustrated to see her dance card had been filled prior to her even stepping foot through the mansionâs door. When the footman handed her the card, it was already filled in, scrawled on every line was Barrington until it resembled a handwritten newssheet.
He intended to claim her before everyone, publicly, irrevocably. If she danced every dance with the same man, she may as well climb up on the table and announce they were in love. And they were not in love. She refused to be pinned to the spot like this.
Emma did have questions for him though. Why did he leave her in the garden? Why hadnât he simply stepped away and then come back to join her after? What had his intentions been exactly? And she wanted to know what came next. She needed to know.
The book Sarah revealed the night before was the most scandalous thing Emma had ever laid her eyes upon. She was shocked Hayden had shown his bride at all since it was seemingly for a manâs gaze only. The logical part of her mind did wonder how much was a manâs outrageous fantasy and how many of the various positions were even possible. Drawn on pages was one thing, to contort oneself into the varied ways in which a man and woman could come together was quite another. And not just men and women. Women with other women. Many people in the same room, all touching and exploring each other. Tupping. That didnât seem like the done thing at all. Not outside of a brothel, one wouldnât think, however, the images depicted elegant drawing rooms and bathhouses of the rich and titled behind the many naked and semi-naked couples. This led Emma to believe it wasnât a manâs fantasy book at all, but a thing of fact. Which opened a flood of questions to swamp her thoughts.
Did a woman enjoy taking a manâs penis into her mouth? The images were small but the man had his face tipped to the ceiling in what looked like rapture. If he didnât enjoy it, he likely wouldnât let her do it. In turn, if a man buried his face in between a womanâs legs, what exactly was he doing? And how did that feel?
An anger had surged inside of Emma â right after the questions â that innocent girls werenât educated to expect any of these things to happen after marriage and why not? If she married Charlie and then he asked her to do these things, she would be mortified and embarrassed and not know where to start at all. If it was the done thing amongst the gently bred fairer sex, then girls in their seasons needed to be warned. Not in as greater detail but they needed to know what to expect at the very least.
Setting her jaw, she strode towards the young ladyâs circle with purpose but Barrington appeared as though out of thin air to delay her.
