The evening meal was finished. Gem and her mother were cleaning up when Cia appeared at their fire. She bowed and signed to Tog asking if Gem could join the younger people for a while.

Tog growled and signed, “Do not be late. I want to leave soon. I will be watching you.”

Cia grabbed Gem’s hand and they ran to join several of the young cave dwellers who were sitting around a fire at Tem’s cave. Tem, like Og, was now old enough to be on his own. He, too, was searching for a woman to keep him warm at night and his cave clean during the day.

There were greetings spoken by everyone, and the noise level

raised.

“Sit,” Tem urged the women. “We are talking about many words tonight.” They all had time to think. Hunting meant long days and short nights. And the women, too, had time to think as they worked around the fire-pit or scrapped skins clean.

“Tell us the words you have.” Cia urged.

“Tem thinks a man’s cock could be called a penis,” Pat said quietly.

A young, handsome man stood , “I am Dik.” He reached under his hunting skirt and pulled out his penis. “This is Dik, too. Do you like the word?” He shook his thick penis until the girls started to giggle. “Dik sounds like a good name.”

“The word is a funny one. Dik, dik, dik,” the young women chanted until the elders of the cave turned to stare hard at them.

There was a lot of giggling. The women put their hands over their mouths, but shaking shoulders gave them away.

They caught their breath and began again.

“Dik and penis. They are good words. We will use them,” decided Cia.

Hoe frowned. “Who died and made you queen?”

Cia stared her sister down, eventually forcing Hoe to look away. “You know one day I will have my own clan. I do not want you in my clan. From now on you are not my sister.”

Silence followed her words. Hoe stood and turned on the group. “One day you will all be sorry for the way you treated me.” She turned to her sister. “Fuck you, Cia. I hope you die.”

Cia laughed. “I will one day, but until then stay away from me and my friends. You are a bad woman.”

Hoe stomped away, her bottom jiggling. The young men whistled and the women jeered until Hoe was out of sight.

“Now, start the speaking game, Lia. Do you have a new word?” Cia said.

Lia giggled. “I was thinking about mating. There must be a word to mean a man and woman will be one for life.”

“Any idea?” Cia asked the group.

Lia wiggled her fingers. “I know the word ‘merry’ means happy.”

“What if merry also meant to be forever one with each other?” Gem asked. “I think the woman will be ‘wife.’ Man will be ‘husband’ or ‘lover.’”

Cia smiled. “I like those words.” She looked at the group. “Do you like the words?”

They nodded.

“Any other words today?”

Chu stood. He patted his round, hard stomach.
