Abyss. On occasion, wings appeared on her, and her hair turned

blonde as she fought the two dead Xeetahn kings.

There were numerous humans now gathered on the mountain,

obviously the hunters in Ulrike’s employ. Cain’s uncles and Destyan

were nowhere to be seen, but Gabriel lay on the ground, struggling to

get up. “Hurry,” he whispered. “Pierre and Cain…They’re trapped.”

A sudden knowledge appeared in Astred’s mind, a memory not

his own that told him Lucien had been sent back to Xeetha through a

portal created by Cain. But even if Lucien was safe, the rest of them

were definitely not.

Unfortunately, Astred remained in Cain’s arms, still with a tail

and making it hard for Cain to do anything about the hunters currently

moving in on them. A portal appeared in the middle of the summit,

obviously created by Gabriel. But Gabriel remained weak, and the

demon kings had their hands full with Ulrike. And there were so

many hunters, just like that time when his family had been kidnapped.

“I don’t know what you did,” one of them said with a grin, “but I

don’t really care. I never liked the bitch anyway. And guess what?

Now there’s nothing standing in our way.”

“Wrong,” Gabriel said as he got up. “You’ll have to get through

me to touch them.”

The hunters snickered. “It’s going to be very fun to do just that,”

one of the humans said, leering. “Just wait your turn.”

“Go,” Gabriel said, ignoring the hunters. “I can hold them off

until you rescue the others and get to safety.”

Astred wanted to say that there was no way that could happen.

Gabriel couldn’t possibly hold his ground in front of the hunters, not

in his condition. He was too weak. But the humans seemed to know

something Astred didn’t because when Gabriel took a step forward,

they stepped back.

“Don’t underestimate him,” one human shouted. “You’ve seen

what he can do.”
