Chapter 17

Jacob Stark rose early the next morning. He hadn't slept well the night before but never did when he had a mission ahead of him. He needed to scope out the site, particularly from an environmental perspective. He wanted to study the area in order to determine his position so he could line up his shot and calculate target distance and bullet trajectory. He’d checked the weather and the weather pattern was stable. Later, he’d estimate these variables based on mathematical calculations he’d used his entire life as an Army Ranger sniper.

Jacob had been a sniper for years, and he did his job well. He was a highly skilled long-range rifle marksman. He’d graduated from the U.S. Army Sniper School in Fort Benning Georgia, and in the years that followed, he’d used his sniper skills and training frequently. He’d stayed at the top of his game through regular, repetitive, and diligent practice. He spent time at the range several days a week. He used his field craft skills to ensure maximum efficiency and effective engagement with little or minimal risk. That’s why he was always uneasy until he saw the terrain and environmental conditions of the operation.

Jacob walked over to the dining facility and grabbed a cup of coffee and a bagel. Then he walked over to the Base Armory and asked to look at their sniper rifles.

The corporal was eager to help him. The commanding officer had made it clear that Major Jacob Stark would be there early and that he must be given everything he needed.

The young soldier studied him. "We’ve got just about any kind of sniper rifle you'd want. Do you have a favorite?"

"I like the .300 Win Mag," Jacob announced. "I like it's accuracy and stopping power. I can hit my target at 300 yards. But in truth, I’ve had experience and can use about any make of sniper rifle.”

The soldier went over to a gun cabinet, unlocked it, and handed Jacob a .300 Win Mag. He picked up the rifle and inspected it. He liked the feel of the barrel. He sighted the scope and was pleased.

The corporal watched him quietly. "That's a nice weapon," he announced. "We’ve got a couple of guys attached to this unit that like the Winchester Mag."

Jacob nodded. "They’ve made a lot of changes to it in recent years. Now you can hit your target at about 1500 meters, or about a mile. The long-range accuracy is a lot better than it used to be. I used a Win Mag when I was with the Secret Service. I haven't used one recently though," he admitted. He picked up the gun again and weighed it in his hands. "This feels heavier than the older guns."

The soldier nodded. "Yes sir, it is. I think it weighs a couple of pounds more. I've got a buddy at home that uses one of these for hunting moose and big game. He swears it delivers better long-range performance based on bullet weight than most other .
