Chapter 56.

Swallowing, I turn away, hide my angry tears. What if we can’t find my missing eggs?

This theft—this kidnapping—wasn’t by accident. Someone knew I would be here, knew my eggs would be harvested this afternoon.

He, she, they, planned to steal them.

But who? And why?

Whoever it was, they hoped I wouldn’t find out. That must be why they only took half. The thief couldn’t know I’d be alert and awake during surgery. Nor would they expect the doctor to loudly keep count.

The aggression spell triggered the instant I discovered the loss.

Six of my eggs are missing.

Will they be fertilized by some unknown supernatural? Will my children be out there somewhere, growing up without me? Future hostages used against me, or worse, turned against me?

I remember what the doctor said about my eggs. “They had a radiance to them. Some glowed brightly, while others glowed darkly.”

Mine are not only human eggs, they’re something other. Something more. In truth, I have no idea what I am, much less what my offspring might be. Psychic? Part vampire? Part wolf? Part demon? All of the above?

I meet Leonidas’s gaze. “One or more sorcerers were involved in this theft—the abduction of my children! The moment the words: it was not to be, came out of the doctor’s mouth everyone, including me, went psycho.”

“Yes.”

I stare at my Jugulo, searching for differences. “You weren’t affected?”

“No.” He presses his lips together, tightens his hands into fists. “If such sorcery was fashioned specifically for me, then yes, I might be affected by such an enchantment.” He raises a sardonic, elegant eyebrow—reminding me of his collar.

Shrugging, I say nothing.

“You are correct. Sorcerers were involved. One or more vampires are tangled up in this, also.”

“I’ve got a killer of a headache.”

He nods. “A result of the spell.”

“I want to return to the Magic Lands,” I tell him. “I long to see Stafford. He’ll help us figure this all out.”

I need to heal in a safe place. I need a fucking break!

“Of course. I will take you. I don’t want you commanding the void, not in your current state.”

“Thanks, Leonidas.”

Hyped on adrenaline and emotionally burnt out, I can’t sense the void, much less use it. Maybe that ability has worn off already.

I pace and seethe, while my vampire compels the fertility clinic staff to answer my questions. I interrogate everyone, while Leonidas disappears, relocating my remaining eggs to an unknown and, therefore, safe place.

The memories of the clinic staff have been erased, the interrogation process is a waste of time. I get very little out of them.

My adrenaline spike is gone, I’m wiped out. I want Stafford, Wonder Dog, and the comfort of friends. Leonidas flashes me just outside the Magic Lands. As a vamp, he can’t cross the barrier.

“You do not intend to walk, do you?” he asks, concern in his electric blue eyes. “I will retrieve your phone from Ashford’s estate, but until then, keep mine.” He holds out his cellphone.

I take it, say nothing.

“Call Owen, he will pick you up.”

I don’t reply.
