Chapter 11

As Marc takes his shower, I practice throwing my blades across the room, over and over again, until I spot David walk in. I quickly stand and calmly remark, “Oh good, a moving target.” I watch David’s eyes grow wider, which I find entertaining and a small mischievous smile creeps over my face. He shifts to the other side of the room as his full form appears. I aim my sai blade directly at his head. I make sure I don’t hurt him. Before the last second of release, I adjust my aim; the blade lands a few inches from his head. David stares at the blade embedded deeply into the wall just behind him.

“Marc! Would you hurry up? I think your demon is trying to kill me!”

Within the next hour, I am once again surrounded by my witch pack, Megan, Zaylen, David, Marc, and Evan. Zaylen glances at me, reading my thoughts, and says, “Don’t worry, Jinn, this briefing shouldn’t take too long.”

Megan opens up an old book and flips through the pages. Once she finds the section, she’s looking for. She begins reading the page out loud, “In ancient Egypt, there once was a powerful deity named Sekhmet. Her name translation literally means ‘Powerful One.’ Her images are seen as a lion-headed woman with a sun disc above her head, meaning she was Ra's daughter. She held the same powers as any other gods or goddesses. Once, she was sent to seek justice and balance within humankind, but instead, she only fell into a rampage at finding how the human species adored the other gods over her. As time passed, carnage was all that Sekhmet’s destruction left behind. And she became known as ‘The Destroyer.’ This became known throughout Egypt. She was a terrifying goddess. Offerings and temples were established in hopes of pleasing the ‘Powerful One’ so that she would then protect the people.”

Megan pauses as she turns the page, and I sigh from boredom. “Is there a reason you are reading this to us?” I ask, growing perturbed.

Megan briefly glances over to Zaylen, but Evan is the one that answers, “Sekhmet is the Brotherhood’s deity, the one they were originally gaining power from.”

Megan turns toward Evan and asks, “Is that why they summoned the Demon warriors from Egypt too?”

Zaylen pulls the book closer to him, flips through a few pages, and then looks back at us. “It enhances power or inborn abilities ten times the original amount. For a witch, speed, strength, or cloaking could be the enhancement, but I’m sure there’s much more.” Zaylen looks back at Megan with concern.

I walk toward the window and watch the humans leisurely walking across the streets without a care in the world. I cross my arms over my chest and nonchalantly state, “I know how it ends.”

David shifts to the other side of the window; with a curious expression, he asks, “What?”

Marc never moves from his seat, but his voice holds the same curiousness. “How?” he asks.

I answer David as I peer over to him, “Sekhmet, and her reign of terror.
