I wasn’t certain I could ever understand them. I’d watched Jameson throw several hard punches without hesitation and I’d sensed his fury from where I’d been standing. If he’d been given the chance or had carried a weapon in his jacket, the arrogant ass with the gleaming white teeth would now have several bullets in him.

While the police officers had been cordial, the fact they’d continuously glanced at each other while I retold the story for the third time meant they either didn’t believe me or were planning on losing the case number. Besides, they hadn’t written down more than a few notes. That didn’t bode well for my level of confidence.

The club was packed, every table full of people enjoying the evening. I had a bad taste in my mouth that refused to go away, still angry with both Charlotte for her ridiculous behavior, but also furious with myself for falling victim to fear and insecurity. Plus, I was worried about her.

And finally, I was second guessing whether Matthew and his friend had been the ones following me or if Benny had wanted to provide me with another warning.

Ginger had given me a small section to wait on, which I was grateful for. The first couple of hours had gone without a hitch, the tables turning twice, the tips fantastic. I’d calculated my percentage and I’d already earned over two hundred dollars. No wonder the job was highly sought after. At this rate, I would be able to afford a place of my own in a couple of weeks. Okay, maybe four given the market rental prices. At least it gave me hope.

I hadn’t asked myself if I wanted to stay. I’d fled Montana to the first place that had provided a smidgeon of hope.

Stop feeling sorry for yourself.

I headed back to the bar, placing the empty used glasses in the dirty bin then turning in another order.

“You’re getting the hang of it,” Troy said, beaming as he’d done before.

“I think I am.”

“I told you so. Are you all recovered from the scuffle?”

I rolled my eyes. “The jerk actually thought I’d agree to go party with him. Can you believe that?”

“Yeah, I can. What I find absolutely fascinating is that Mr. Stark almost pulverized him, which would have been spectacular. Is there something you’re not telling me, girl? Are you two dancing under the sheets? We are best friends after all. Right?”

His teasing tone always made me laugh. “There are some things a girl will never admit to.” I wagged my finger at him on purpose.

“Such a bad girl. And don’t look now but there comes Ginger.” He nodded and I glanced in the direction.

The look on her face was one of concern.

“Hi,” I said, fearful something was wrong.

She moved closer, glancing at Troy. “I meant to come out sooner. Are you okay?”

“Never better. The creep got what was coming to him.”

She laughed with me. “Hopefully, that’s the end of his illustrious membership. There’s been a request for you to be the server for a private party.
