Chapter Seventeen
Angus Brent dipped his boar bristle brush into the shaving soap whipping up a satisfying froth. Applying the lather to his cheeks and neck he studied his reflection, reminding himself to touch up any grey roots before they became obvious against his jet black hair. Ageing gracefully was just an excuse lazy people used. Angus smirked slightly as he shaved. He was still a striking man and he knew it. He studied the deep wrinkles around his eyes and his slightly sagging chest and frowned. His body was trim thanks to the hours he spent in his home gym, but no exercise in the world could halt the effects of gravity or delay the ageing process. Pity there were no plastic surgery services in Deerleap, he thought. Angusâ nose wrinkled as cigarette smoke wafted into the bathroom.
Typical Madeleine. He hated cigarettes yet she was too selfish to smoke outside or even by the window.
Angus rinsed the blade under the hot water. âMust you smoke here? I donât want to turn up at the Blores stinking of carcinogens. And how you can smoke in this heat, I have no idea.â
There was no reply. Angus shook his head and slapped on aftershave, sucking in his breath as it stung his smooth cheeks.
Madeleine sat on the edge of the bed cross-legged wrapped in a black satin robe. Leisurely, she stubbed the cigarette out into a marble ashtray and snapped a pair of large clustered pearl earrings on with a flourish. It was a sexy gesture and Angus gravitated towards his wife.
âOh stop pawing at me like a horny teenager, Angus,â snapped Madeleine, pulling away from him. âGet dressed and stop acting like a fool. Youâre dripping water all over me. Idiot.â
Angus gritted his teeth. He had never raised a hand against a woman in his whole life, but Madeleineâs tone and sneer made his fists clench. Just for a second he imagined backhanding her across the face, watching her slightly slanted eyes widen in astonishment, a bead of blood oozing from her cut lip.
He indulged in violent fantasy for a few seconds then shoved it away. He gave her a thin smile.
âWhatever you say, my darling wife.â
Madeleineâs thin eyebrows snapped together. With a sniff she tossed her chestnut hair over one skinny shoulder. Angus selected a freshly laundered shirt and buttoned it up. Age hadnât been particularly kind to Madeleine, he thought uncharitably. She had always been slender and was one of those lucky women who could eat whatever they wanted without putting on a gram of weight, but the sharp angles in her face which heâd found so exotic and alluring when they were younger, now emphasised the thinness of her lips and the ridge of her beaky nose. Years of smoking had puckered the skin around her mouth. With makeup and good clothes she was still attractive, but barefaced she looked haggard and older than her years. Angus glanced at the clock on the nightstand.
âShouldnât you be getting ready? Weâll be late.
