Chapter Twelve

The sky seemed impenetrable, devoid of even the faintest glimmer of starlight. The temperature had plummeted after the sun had finally disappeared beyond the horizon, bringing with it an influx of mixed noises—peculiar rustling from the underbrush on the nearby incline, an eerie hoot from an owl perched in a nearby tree, and even the distant, chilling howls of wolves somewhere outside the hollow.

At least, Riley had reassured the group that the wolves were nowhere near their location. He claimed that the unsettling echoes reverberating through the trees were from quite a distance away, and they had no choice but to take his word for it.

The six of them were all currently huddled around the blazing fire as their facial features were illuminated by the flickering flames. The brightness of the fire was causing shadows to dance behind them, and there was the occasional crackling and popping of the burning logs to set the edgy ambiance.

“Explain to us again how you’re going to disprove that a banshee is roaming around this hollow?” Lucas asked, completely ignoring the glares that he was receiving from Max, Riley, and Ava. The three of them all had different reasons for being irritated with the man, but he didn’t seem to care one way or another. “That device you have there looks like it’s from that ghost movie.”

“To put it plainly, an EMF meter detects electromagnetic radiation. If there is a spirit nearby creating an electromagnetic field, then this machine will alert us to its presence,” Chloe explained as she held up the device for the others to see the display. “That’s not to say that the banshee isn’t keeping her distance. The harbinger of death usually appears to foretell the death of a loved one. If no one that we love is fated to die in the coming weeks, she might not make her presence known.”

“So, this hike of yours was basically a wasted trip then.” Lucas drained what was left of his coffee out of the tin cup that Max had handed him earlier. “Do your listeners really buy into that crap?”

Phoebe wasn’t sure what had prompted Lucas to have such a complete change of personality, but he was making everyone uncomfortable. Had he overheard them talking earlier about the briefcase? Was he worried that they would try to find it themselves? She figured the chances of anyone locating a briefcase supposedly hidden in the hollow twelve years ago were as low as getting struck by lightning.

“You did, LD. Next time you want to remain anonymous, maybe don’t use your initials,” Chloe pointed out in irritation before Phoebe could stop her. “Pheebs, I can’t take it anymore. This guy is an ass, and we should have listened to Max and Riley’s advice not to have them tag along.”

It wasn’t that Phoebe could fault Chloe from speaking her mind. Ever since Ava had stormed off to her tent, Lucas’ mood had spiraled to the point that he was being rude and condescending. Dinner
