My home seemed to be a little smaller without Fred’s presence, without her personality beaming around it. She’d gone to visit a police officer to ask for a favor for me, and I was already missing her. I couldn’t let her go back to England, I just couldn’t, but I had no idea how to keep her here. She was only on a six months visitors’ visa anyway, and though she had only been in my home a few days, the end of her time seemed to be rushing towards me.

And how long was she going to be tonight? It seemed as if she had been gone for a very long time already; every five minutes I checked my watch, which seemed to be either racing or standing still. I drank some beer to calm myself, it didn’t help, and I couldn’t search for her because she was in my one and only vehicle, talking with a police officer we wanted a favor from. I should have done it myself; she was part of my old Department after all; I should have talked to her.

I was still worrying when my door bell chimed and I looked towards it with what can only be described as a look of shock, barely anyone called on a casual basis. I hobbled along the corridor, pulled open the door; and received an enormous shock.

Standing outside was Jerry Youngblood, my old boss.

And he didn’t mess about.

‘Can I come in William; we have to talk.’

I stepped back, he strode in, knowing where the kitchen was, the table, the chairs, he’d been here before, many times before my accident. I followed him in.

‘You got a beer?’ he asked.

I pulled a cool one from the fridge, handed it to him, he took the top half off it in one gulp.

‘What’s wrong, Jerry?’ I asked as I stood and looked down at where he took a seat at the table.

He finished the beer with his second gulp.

‘Willie Paine was murdered in the correctional facility earlier tonight. Stabbed in the neck by one Samual Divine; home-made knife; took six wardens to drag Samual to the ground and get him off Willie. Willie’s dead and they have Samual sedated. Samual said a few words before they put him under. He said; the Devil told him to do it. That’s all he said. the Devil told him to do it. Both the Governor and the Department think Willie’s death is somehow linked to do your visit; there has never, previously, been any animosity between Willie and Samual, they were buddies of a kind. What the hell’s going on, William?’

He looked around the kitchen.

‘And where’s your new partner? I need to speak with her too.’
