“I’ve got something to tell you,” Ken announced when they had finished washing the dishes.
“All right.” Snap gestured to the living room. “Let’s sit and you can spill.”
“What do you mean by that?” Ken flopped into the recliner, hanging his legs over the arm. It seemed to be his favorite way to sit.
Snap took the corner of the couch closest to Ken, bending over to rest his elbows on his knees. “You’ve had something on your mind since we arrived back here. I figured you’d tell me when you were ready.”
Ken jerked a phone out of his jeans pocket then tossed it to Snap. After catching it, Snap studied it.
“This isn’t your phone,” he commented. “Where did this come from?”
Taking a deep breath and not meeting his gaze, Ken mumbled, “It was there when I got back to work yesterday in my locker. It was how I got the latest stuff this morning.”
“You didn’t think I should’ve known then?” He wasn’t angry. No, he was actually surprised that Ken had chosen to tell him about it instead of keeping it a secret.
“Yeah, you should know. That’s why I’m telling you. I’m pretty sure it won’t matter now. The person giving me information has to know you’d find it eventually, whether I told you or not.” Ken pressed his cheek into the cushion of the chair.
Standing, Snap touched the top of Ken’s head. “I’ll take this to the lab and see if there are any prints on it besides mine and yours. I’m pretty sure there aren’t going to be any. Your friend is way too smart to leave any clues for us.”
Ken snorted. “Trust me, man. No matter what we do, I think he’s two steps ahead of us. This has been planned out for a while. I guess he was waiting for the right sucker to get to work for him.”
“And you’ve never seen him during this? Not even when you were first approached?” He was trying to figure out what was real and what wasn’t from what Ken had told him.
Sitting up and letting his feet fall to the ground, Ken looked at him. “No, I was approached by a dealer who said the Cortez cartel wanted me to start moving stuff for them. I’m not entirely sure why they picked me. Like I said before, I never dealt drugs and I tried to stay under the radar with them. I just moved a few shipments, that’s all. They grabbed me off the street a few weeks ago.”
Snap watched as Ken shot to his feet and paced in front of him. He ran his hands through his hair then tugged on the ends. Snap noticed he was shaking then Ken rubbed his hands over his arms. He wanted to embrace Ken, telling him it would be okay. Yet he couldn’t make that promise.
Instead he asked, “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” Ken bit his lip then swallowed loudly. “I’m freaking out a little bit. The idea that you have that phone and he’ll find out about it makes me feel like I have a target on my back.
