Pace
I didn’t see Cati for the rest of the night. She spent it locked in her room with Mav. I walked by a couple of times, because I couldn’t stay away, and I heard nothing but giggles and happy voices. The sound put my mind at ease. Cati had her son back, and I was all in to make sure this pack stayed in one piece. I missed home, of course. I worried every day about Vara, but I also trusted Baron to guard her with his life. And Baron was like a fucking cockroach, nearly impossible to kill.
Guilt swamped me over what I’d done with Vaughn and how close I’d gotten to Cati. I should stay away from him. He was dangerous, making my mind twist itself into knots. He called to my blood and all the inner wants that I’d spent so long stuffing down, a sacrifice of being alpha to my pack.
Part of me hated him for it. Even now, remembering his kiss, the feel of his body against mine, had me hard as a rock. I tried to remember who I’d been all my life, the scarred, tough alpha Pace who led his pack out of darkness. He was still there, but intertwined with him was the Pace I was within these walls. The one who wanted more, the one who felt pulled toward Cati and Vaughn like I was water falling over a cliff. Was I even trying to swim against the current? Was I reaching for something on the bank to pull me to safety?
No, no I wasn’t. I was launching myself over the waterfall head first. Fuck.
The next morning, we gathered in the meeting room. Me, Dare and his guards, Reese, and Yela. She didn’t look like she’d slept at all. She still wore the same dress from yesterday, her eyes were swollen, and her face was pale and blotchy.
She trembled in her seat next to Dare, and I didn’t blame her. She was a werewolf—a small one at that—weakened with hunger, terrified for her daughter, and in the room of most likely the biggest alpha Were she’d ever seen. I didn’t want to feel sympathy for her, not at all, but I imagined the roles reversed and Cati in a room with her enemies trying to save Mav…
“So what’s the plan?” Bay asked, his arms crossed over his chest. Nash stood beside him in the same position. He met my eyes and gave me a stern nod. I returned the gesture.
Dare scrubbed his hands over his face, revealing dark circles under his eyes. He wore no shirt, and his shoulders were bunched, the muscles tense. He fisted his hand, and I thought he was going to slam it down on the table, but then he sighed deeply and relaxed his fingers, laying his palm face down on the scarred wood.
“I’m sick of this,” he said. “Packs should be working together to reclaim our land from the Noweres, to quit living in fear, and instead we’re fighting each other.
