“I’m hungry. Can we get something for dinner?” Scarlett says.
“No,” I say.
She frowns, crossing her arms, as she sits on the other end of the couch, away from me. She doesn’t let my no faze her though. She leans forward, and as she bites her lip, she begins crawling toward me on the couch. When she reaches me, she grabs my chin and forces my lips to touch hers. Any other time, I would be happy to kiss her. Any other time, I would give her exactly what she wanted. Sex. Distraction. Passion.
Right now though, I can’t give her any of those things. Because, right now, she’s not asking for those things because she wants them. She’s asking to try to distract me. She’s asking because she thinks, if eight o’clock comes and goes, she can save Marcel. She thinks she’d be doing the world a favor by saving him, and in turn, she’d be saving me. But she can’t do either. She can’t save anyone. I’m not even sure if she can save herself at this point.
I push her back, stopping the kiss, and stand up. She frowns and huffs as her arms go back across her chest. She is frustrated, and I understand, but she chose to be in this life. She chose to be in my world, and my world involves doing a lot of things that you don’t want to do to other people. In my world, sex and food and pleasure come after work.
“When are we going to have dinner? I’m starving,” Scarlett says.
“Later,” I say.
“I’m hungry now though.” She gets up off the couch and heads over to the kitchen where her purse is sitting. She pulls out her phone and begins typing something in. “I’ll order some pizzas,” she says, lifting the phone to her ear.
I shake my head as I storm over to her and grab her phone out of her hand.
“Give it back,” she says, reaching to grab the phone back out of my hand.
“No.”
“Give it back; it’s mine. And I’m hungry. I’m going to order a pizza.”
She reaches for her phone again, and that’s when I realize that she thinks she has any sort of control over the situation. She doesn’t. She has no control. I thought I had taught her that. I thought I had taught her that she wasn’t the one in control anymore. That I am. She still hasn’t learned that yet though.
I drop her phone on the floor and immediately step on it, ensuring that it is shattered and unusable.
Her face drops as she looks at her shattered phone on the floor. She slowly brings her eyes back up to my face, and I see the pain and hatred in her eyes. Pain that isn’t there because of a broken phone.
“I hate you.”
I can’t help but let my lips curl up into a smirk. She’s acting like a teenager whose parents just took her phone and told her she couldn’t go out tonight. She’s not acting like the strong, sexy woman I know.
