Chapter 14
T
he next morning, Camille found herself sitting on a hard metal chair, waiting to get checked out by a local physician. She leaned forward, fidgeting, hoping that she didn’t have any traces of the poison in her.
Could it enter through my skin? she wondered. Perhaps there was some liquid on the outside of the cup . . .
She’d never been that close to death before. The thought terrified her. She looked at Sidney who was dozing, her head resting against the wall, wondering how she could remain so calm.
Two hours later, the checkups were complete; the results showed they were fine. They met the rest of the team at the home, entering just in time to hear the end of a briefing on safety procedures from Elena’s security team.
Conveniently, Oleg wasn’t there. Camille struggled with how to break the news to Sidney. She knew she had to do it, but the right words didn’t seem to come.
If only she could’ve recorded Oleg’s conversation from the law firm. It would’ve been so much easier to let him do the convincing.
Maybe that’s exactly what I’ll do, she thought. I could challenge Oleg and record his comments! *
She went to her room and looked in her bag for the voice recorder. It took searching three pockets, but she finally found it. And it was charged.
She put on a jacket so she could discreetly keep it in her pocket and turn it on at will. She even recorded herself in the room several times just to make sure that it would pick up the sound with the microphone muffled in her pocket.
Then she heard the door open downstairs, followed by was Oleg’s raspy voice—an unmistakable sound. The opportunity was presenting itself far sooner than she’d imagined. How would she set up the moment to record him? How could she get him in a room alone somewhere? There was the sitting area near the doorway with two small sofas; that seemed like her only option.
She slowly walked out of her room. This was her moment. She had resolved to do it, and there was no looking back.* Luckily Vince and Oleg were already in the sitting room, chatting away about the world cup. Camille entered the room and asked Vince if she could talk to Oleg alone. Vince agreed and walked out.
The voice recorder was already on, in her pocket and clutched in her clammy hand. “Did you hear about what happened to me and Sidney today?” she began.
“No. What happened?”
“Someone tried to poison us. To poison me.”
“And you think it was me?” He leaned forward, glaring at her with contempt, his face turning red with anger. “Seriously, do you really think I’d attempt poisoning my own granddaughter and her colleague?”
“Maybe not her, but I’m the only one who actually knows what you’re trying to do. And you probably knew that Sidney doesn’t like tea, that she wouldn’t have taken it anyway.”
“Actually, I didn’t know that. I just poured her some tea the first day I was here.
