CHAPTER 4

Last week’s aftermath had been easier to explain to the guys on the dock. Jack had spun a half-true tale of a speeding ticket devolving into police brutality, the red lines circling his wrists and the brush of a bruise across his check good backup for the latest entry on his police blotter. Jack’s co-workers were quick to believe stories of “the man” overstepping his authority, and his reputation for brawling made that kind of “overstepping” likely.

His co-workers couldn’t see his injuries this week. The welts and bruises were safely tucked away behind the seat of his jeans, but they could see the way he moved, like he’d aged twenty years overnight. Working on the docks, bending and rising and lifting and lowering hour after hour, wasn’t exactly what the doctor ordered. A doctor might order him to spend the day on his stomach with a cock in his ass. Well, no. But it was a pretty thought.

“Looks like someone kicked your ass,” Bernie said.

“Little bar scuffle.” Jack put his hand on his lower back, higher than where it actually hurt.

“Better hope that’s not your kidney.”

“No big thing.” Jack McNeil made a habit out of bar scuffles.

“They pull you in for fighting again?”

“Naw, didn’t even get taken down to the station this time. You know I got my ways.” Jack McNeil made a habit out of walking away without consequences, too. He checked over his shoulder to make sure the shift supervisor was still listening to them.

“You gonna work or you gonna cry?” Carter asked when he was caught watching.

“Sorry, boss. Not like I asked that thug to take a swing at me.”

Carter snorted. “If I know you, you were asking for something. You got a way of finding trouble.”

“Lucky for me I got a get-out-jail-free card.” Jack winked. He kept putting the bait out there, but he hadn’t gotten a nibble yet. Today was no different.

“Just do your fucking job,” the guy muttered, turning his back on Jack and walking away. Fuck. What did Jack have to do to get in on the action around here?

“What stick’s up his butt?” he asked Bernie.

“That shipment coming in. You know, the one we don’t know anything about? Sounds like it’s coming soon. Everyone’s on high alert.”

“Yeah? Soon like when?”

“Don’t ask me. I just do my fucking job.” Bernie went back to stacking boxes. Jack joined him. He was pretty sure Bernie was nowhere near the inside of this thing, but he’d been around the docks a long time. People trusted him like they didn’t trust Jack, no matter how hard he worked at his hood persona.

He was going to have to turn up the heat, give the people at the top the motivation to bring in some additional protection, because right now they were too confident in their own arrangements to need what he was trying to offer.

At his next break, he took out his phone and called in a favor. The conversation was short and seemingly banal and left enough time on his break to scroll through his messages from Maddox.
