Zach stood up, grabbed his shoe, and ran as fast as he could for the van. He slammed the door shut and put his foot on the gas. The van’s tires spun for a second before they gripped the asphalt, and then he was moving forward. Zach cranked the wheel and turned back toward the edge of the town.

He was scrabbling with one hand for the satphone on the passenger seat when the man in camo stepped in front of the van.

Zach swerved to miss him. But not far enough.

The man went down under the wheels. The van bounced like it was going over a speed bump. Zach felt, more than heard, the impact of the man’s body.

Zach hit the brakes and the van skidded to a halt. He got out, and looked back in the street.

Zach was pretty sure the guy wasn’t human. This wasn’t his first day on the job, after all. But there was a chance that there was still someone worth saving back there. Zach had seen people twisted into monsters before. Maybe none of them had made it back yet, but that didn’t mean none of them ever would.

So he walked, slowly and carefully, to the man’s body.

It didn’t move.

Zach stood over the lumpy shape in the street.

The man in camo was facedown. The van’s tires had left big furrows in his back and legs. He wasn’t breathing.

Zach sagged with the sudden weight of another death on his conscience, another civilian he hadn’t been able to save. It had been a while since he’d felt this kind of guilt.

Then the man’s head turned completely around to look at Zach, and it was still grinning.

Zach screamed, leaped back, and pulled the Smith & Wesson Governor from his coat pocket and fired two shots at the man in the street.

Sure, he felt bad about hitting the guy, but he wasn’t a complete idiot. Anything that can come up smiling after being run down by a van is not even remotely human anymore.

Zach had been carrying the gun ever since he’d left Nebraska. The Secret Service had not even searched him for it.

The .45s punched right into the man’s chest at point-blank range.

And he was still getting up.

He smiled at Zach, and his grin became even wider, until it split his face, until his head fell open as if on a hinge, and something emerged from the man’s mouth like an antenna extending.

Zach wondered for a moment why he’d ever missed this job.

Then he started running.
