Mami fixes us bowls of farina and turns the TV on in the living room. She never allows food outside the kitchen, but she sits down and pats the spot beside her for me. Mami uses cinnamon sticks and condensed milk in her farina. It’s thick and warm and doesn’t make me want to throw up. We eat while watching a rerun of a telenovela, and I catch her snickering. Tomorrow, she’ll go to bed after a Bible reading; tonight, she’s someone else. When we’re done, I wash our bowls. She tells me it’s okay to let the pan soak overnight.

Back upstairs, she turns to me. “Why don’t you sleep with me tonight?”

I’m scared I’ll get nauseous or have to pee too many times, but I follow her, climb into bed beside her, and sleep through the night.
