CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

DECLAN

Standing over Leah’s shoulder, I peer down at the computer screen in my office and rub the back of my head roughly in irritation. I’d managed to talk her through doing a search, but waiting for her to read through it all is arduous. Not that I can complain.

“How’d you like the book? Sebas gave it to you, right?” she asks, interest peaking her husky voice and I grunt lowly in acknowledgement. “I get it might be tough doing something new after doing it your own way for so long, but it’ll get easier.”

“It was fine. The pictures were easy to follow, but I don’t know how comparable it is to the written instructions,” I reply distractedly, gesturing at the screen impatiently. “What did you find on the bitch?”

“You know, you really should just ask her, Declan,” Leah says skeptically, but she peers at the screen through squinted eyes. Puffing out her lips, the scar on her cheek ripples and I expectantly rock back on my heels. “The mom’s been the president of her homeowner’s association for about four years and since then, there’s been a ton of drama. There’s even been police involvement when someone realized she was going on their property. Ever since Sylvia moved out with her ex-boyfriend, her mom’s been going off the rails there. The past year, there’s been a lot more police involvement. The ex got a DUI right before she moved here, too.”

“What about after that post? Is there a change in what she posts about, or how frequently she posts?” I ask, and Leah sweeps her hair back into a tail to show off her healed ears . . . or the stubs that used to be her ears. My mouth dries and she glances up with knowing eyes before shaking her head lightly. Turning back to the screen, she ignores my scowl and I lean against the wall to cross my arms tightly over my chest. “What about the mom?”

“As for Sylvia’s mom, she went on a few short, vague posts about being a mom and how painful it is when your kids didn’t appreciate you. Again, pretty standard. Actually, all her posts have a lot to do with judge-y ‘Christian’ groups that are just racist hate groups and parenting groups that are just hate groups too . . . You can’t just find her yourself? Why is she even here?”

“Not as easily, but that’s fine. Sylvia said she picked a fight with her ex a couple days before she left and that he said some pretty nasty stuff. I’m guessing that’s the day he got the DUI. I wonder if he’s fuckin’ her mother,” I ponder aloud, dodging the questions she flung at me. Leah cringes and shivers in disgust. “There’s no debts under any of the Brass’ umbrella companies between the two of them. I’d have to get an Accountant to look up if there’s been any contact that wasn’t debts, like a P.I. or something.”

“Do you just
