CHAPTER 21

DECLAN

Following Claudia back to my apartment, I try to stay at a respectable distance, but I’m nervous as fuck that she’ll drive right past the turnoff and go home. Until faced with the thought of her choosing to not stay with me, the nerves didn’t start, but they’re here in full force now.

We come to the intersection that leads to the alley of our buildings. My hands shiver inside my gloves, and I promise myself it won’t be the end of the world if she chooses not to.

When her turn signal pops on, I let go of the largest breath I’ve ever held. I follow her in, and park next to her. She’s slow getting out, but when she does, she reaches over and grasps my hand in hers. “Let’s go.”

Together we climb the steps and then enter. When I shut the door, it’s as if I’m shutting out the rest of the world.

It’s awkward as we look at each other. “I’ve never really hung out with a girl before,” I admit, laughing to cover up how out of my element I am.

“The only other guy I’ve hung out with is Steven, and we always did what he wanted to do,” she admits.

“What do you want to do?” I ask, hoping she’ll give some direction to us both. “If this was your perfect day, what would it be?”

She sighs, settling into the reality of this situation. “I’d change into some comfortable clothes, spend the afternoon on the couch watching something that isn’t a cartoon, I’d order dinner, and then sleep without having to worry if I’m going to be woken up by a toddler who still isn’t potty trained yet.”

“Then that’s exactly what we’ll do,” I promise.

“I don’t even have any clothes to change into,” she reminds me.

“I can take care of that.” Leading her to my bedroom, I come to a stop in front of my dresser, opening the door that houses all my sweatpants and t-shirts. “Take your pick.”

“Are you serious?” Her tone is bemused, as if no one has ever let her do something like this before.

“Yeah, the hottest thing I’ll probably ever see is you wearing my clothes, sweet girl. Give me a memory that’ll last when we have to get back to reality.”

Her gaze heats as if she seems to realize this is different; we’re different with each other than we are with anyone else. She’s letting her guard down, and I’m letting myself be vulnerable.

“I’m gonna go change,” she heads for the bathroom.

“I’ll do the same. Meet you out there on the couch?”

She nods, rolling her lips together. "Hey Dec?"

"Yeah?"

"Thank you for this.”

"You never have to thank me."

“I do, but I appreciate you for making me feel like I don’t have to.”

Watching her leave, I shake my head. This woman is everything, and the fact no one’s ever made her a priority before infuriates me. But she’s willing to give me the next fifteen or so hours, and I’m going to make them the best they can be.
