Chapter 6

“I brought pizza,” Deck announced when CJ opened the door for him.

The little girl reached for the boxes. “You’re my favorite.”

From her spot on the couch, Bobbi looked over when he stuck his head around the corner. “You want me to put these in the oven, or serve them right away?”

“Just stick them in the oven,” she called, pleased he seemed to know his way around a house. “I’ll get them out later for dinner.”

His head popped around the corner again, frowning this time. “You most certainly will not. That’s why I’m here. Take these, CJ,” she heard him call into the kitchen this time, “so I can get my boots off and not mess up the floor anymore.”

“I swept today,” Bobbi heard her daughter proudly proclaim.

And Decker, bless him, lied.

“You did an amazing job. I know you’ve been a big help to your mama. Who are you today?”

Bobbi blinked at the question, but CJ knew exactly what he was talking about.

“Cinderella Jewell,” she replied promptly.

“Cinderella Jewell, hmm? I like it.”

“Yeah, thanks for the suggestion. I think I’ll be Caroline Jasmine tomorrow.”

“Don’t worry, kiddo, you’ll find one you like.”

There was a pause, and Bobbi wondered what was going on in the kitchen.

Frowning, she stared down at the cast on her leg. Apparently, while she’d been in the ER, Decker and CJ had bonded even further.

She had to admit the events of yesterday afternoon were a little hazy. After she’d been stupid enough to step off that boulder and snap her tibia like a—a—a very easily snapped thingy, Decker had taken command.

She’d been light-headed and nauseated from the pain, but he’d collected all their stuff and had kept CJ calm, then driven very carefully back to the lot at the ranch, where he’d lifted her into the passenger seat of his roomy—and newer!—pickup, buckled both her and CJ in, then driven them to the hospital.

He’d been calm, collected, and absolutely the rock she’d needed to rely on.

Which was an odd feeling.

Since her mother passed away, Bobbi hadn’t had anyone really close she could depend on…someone she knew would be there for her without a doubt. But last night, after Decker had dropped them off at her house and gotten her settled, he’d said he’d be back this afternoon with food.

And Bobbi had never once doubted him.

And here he was.

And she still wasn’t sure how she felt.

He’d proposed yesterday. He barely knew her, yet he already wanted to marry her?

Things were moving way too fast.

The way things were going, it was only a matter of time before he broke her—and CJ’s—heart.

Wait, in order to break her heart, her heart would have to be involved, wouldn’t it?

Oh, honey, your heart’s already involved. Any fool could tell.

She could hear her mother’s voice in her head, and sighed, because as she was often telling CJ, Mama is always right.

What would her mama have thought of Decker?

She smiled slightly as she considered it. Her mother had been a no-nonsense woman and likely would have appreciated Decker’s old-fashioned manners, and how kind he was.
