Chapter 28

An Armillam

Alex screamed, clutching her left wrist as her bracelet melted. Agony dwindled into a pulsing burn by the time Pascal loped into the engine room.

“Was it Socrates again?” He banged an air vent with a cricket bat. “Stop ambushing her!”

She shook her head and rotated her forearm, wincing.

Pascal flipped down a magnifying lens from his helmet and examined the flat two-inch wide band of volantium bonded to the skin below her left wrist. “That’s new,” he said. He tapped one of the three metal circles embedded in her forearm.

“Ow!” Alex jerked her arm out of his grip.

A trembling voice, pitched with dread, wafted from outside Angelus. “This is Dr. Strim. Do you require assistance?”

Pascal snaked his head into the hallway and shouted, “Everything is wonderful! Go away!”

Phosphorescent lines rippled like water under Alex’s skin, forming a glowing Stella Signum on the back of her left hand. The inventor grabbed her wrist. “What have you been playing with?” he mumbled, frowning.

“I didn’t do anything. The armillam melted.”

“I’ve never seen Stone Tech fuse to skin and bone,” Pascal said. He prodded one of the metal plugs with his hoof, and an ache rippled the length of her arm. “This looks permanent.”

“You can’t take it out?”

“Not without cutting your arm off, which I don’t recommend.”

“Is it dangerous?”

“Given the Professor’s penchant for stealing treacherous artifacts without reading warning labels, almost certainly.” He shrugged. “But anything is dangerous, if you look hard enough for the pointy end.”

Alex blinked away pain in her wrist. She said, “Let’s finish these repairs, then find Grandfather so I can yell at him.”
