North Vancouver

A white picket fence enclosed the front yard of Rabidowski’s new home. The small bungalow painted sage green exuded the good taste of Martha Stewart’s show. Dressed like a hostess with the mostest, Brittany greeted them in the front hall with a tray of drinks and ta

sty hors d’oeuvres. In decor, the interior was as far from a whorehouse as could be. On the mantel above the welcoming blaze behind a filigreed screen was the eagle feather Ghost Keeper had given the newlyweds at their reception. The curtains, the pillows scattered about for comfort and relaxation, the rich fabrics draped over hard surfaces to add warmth and ambiance: wherever Ghost Keeper looked, there were homey touches sewn by hand.

“I’m still working on it,” Brittany said as her guest wandered about. And when he stopped at a bookshelf lined with a minimal collection of books, she added, “I’m making up for the education I never had. Each year I’m going to read the shortlist for the Booker Prize.”

Brittany Starr had quit school at fifteen to turn Lolita tricks. She’d met the Mad Dog when he pulled her over for suspected drunk driving, only to find she was late for work stripping in a bar and was trying to change into her G-string as she drove. Brit had retired from hooking to devote all of her sexual repertoire to plastering a perpetual smirk onto the Mad Dog’s face. All the males at Special X feared his sex life was an exquisite wet dream compared with theirs, and that gave Rabidowski an envied status. Meanwhile, Brit spent each day indulging in whatever whims caught her fancy, learning how to cook like a gourmet and how to turn her home into a haven of domestic bliss. With no demands on her time, she felt as if she were living the life of pampered royalty, and this feeling was enhanced by the fact that the Mad Dog treated her like a queen. In the process, the diamond in the rough was being polished, so when all the factors were added up in this improbable marriage, it was hard to fathom who got the best part of the deal.

A Hollywood ending, with not a dry eye in the house.

The meal, as the Mad Dog had predicted, was one the Cree would remember. They sat around the multi-course feast like Hawkeye and Chingachgook, relating tales of hair-raising adventures in the wilds as Brit provided oohs and aahs to egg them on. Soon they were plotting a joint venture armed with bows and arrows into the Headless
