Before he returned to the Bay Area, Stone took a detour to London and stopped by the magical library to visit his friend Eddie Monkton.

“Not a social call, I take it?” Eddie said when he got a look at Stone’s expression.

“Not this time, I’m afraid.”

“Well, come on in, then. I’ve got tea on.”

Stone didn’t partake of the tea, but he did give Eddie a complete rundown of everything that had happened over the last few days, starting with the museum collapse and ending with his conversation with Mary Reeves.

His friend listened with growing astonishment. “Bloody ’ell,” he said when Stone finished. “I’d never have guessed magic ’ad anything to do with what happened in New York. And you think there’s somebody out there who can put up temporary portals at will? I didn’t think that was possible.”

“Nor did I. That was one of the other things I wanted to ask you—whether you might have heard rumors of such a person. But it sounds like you haven’t.”

“No way.” Eddie shook his head emphatically. “If you’re right, they must’ve either discovered the ability very recently, or been keepin’ a very low profile.”

“Yes, well, this whole thing is looking very much like something far bigger than I suspected is going on. After speaking to Dr. Reeves, I’m convinced now that whoever stole this box didn’t do it on his own. Somebody hired him.”

“Why, though? You said the box didn’t look interesting, and it didn’t ’ave anything inside it. If that’s all the bloke stole—”

Stone held up a hand. “I said the mundanes didn’t find anything inside it. You know as well as I do that doesn’t necessarily mean nothing was there.”

Eddie’s eyes widened. “You think there was some kind o’ magical storage compartment in there.”

“Possibly. Or else there’s something more interesting about those figures painted on the sides—something that doesn’t show up in a photograph.” Stone got up and began pacing. “Dr. Reeves is going to send me her files on the item—all the photos, information on where it was obtained, that sort of thing. If I send it along to you, could you do a bit of research and see if you can find out anything about it? Maybe if we knew where it came from, it might give us a better idea of what it’s used for.”

“And that, in turn, might suggest who might be after it,” Eddie finished, nodding. “You got it, mate. I’ll ring up Ward and we’ll get right on it.”

“Thanks, Eddie. I’ll leave you to that part.”

“What part are you going to do?”

“I’m planning to hunt down the thief. You’re right: somebody with an ability like that can’t hide it forever—especially not now, after what’s happened. Aside from that, I’ve got someone else I want to talk to about tracking the item much more actively. If I’m lucky, maybe I can get you and Ward more to go on. Possibly even the item itself.”

“That would ’elp,” Eddie said. “Good luck, mate.” He shook his head ruefully. “And condolences on the loss of your friend.
