History Lesson #4:

The Stone Cutter Rebellion

From the Official Chronicles of the Empire:

During the years 863-865, Imperial forces were faced with insurrection among the Stone Cutter Communities of North Central Nisab. The insurrection arose when some clans of Stone Cutters attacked other clans that followed different religious practices. Resistance to the Imperial effort was disorganized, and many Stone Cutters welcomed the army as liberators and protectors.

This account is at best misleading. Some 9th Century documents have survived which suggest Pelageyark apparently seized upon the massacre of the fishing hamlet to give him an excuse to rein in the recalcitrant Stone Cutter culture. The Cutters who resisted the Army were cut down like wheat. One 10th Century writer estimated that over 1,000 Stone Cutters were killed during their “rebellion;” however, surviving contemporary military reports paint a much grimmer picture: during just the last six months of the “rebellion,” the Army counted over 900 dead among the Stone Cutters, compared to an astonishingly small number of army casualties: 27 dead and 63 wounded Imperial troops. Perhaps the best indication of the extent of the Army’s efforts can be gleaned from surviving tax records. While not all the records still exist, stone production in 866, the year after the “rebellion,” appears to have been less than 40% of what it had been in 860. At least one scholar believes over 4,000 Stone Cutters were killed or left so badly wounded that they were incapable of work.

Pelageyark ordered a fort – Fort Remembrance – built on the site of the massacred village. The military garrison and attendant activities gave rise to a town which by the year 880 claimed a population of over 350, not including the soldiers posted to the fort.

Once Lo Ta’av and Takael had shown the military commanders the village and the cave, they were dismissed from their original assignment. They traveled back to Dashakar and sailed back to the Kotidor Stronghold.
