Saturday, 26 June, 00:36 a.m.

Luke stepped away from Emily Gallagher’s file and placed more logs on the fire. He stared into the flames, gripping the mantel.

The woman in his bed couldn’t have survived everything he’d read in the file. More details emerged from the information in Jane Doe’s autopsy report. The bodies of the dead speak; the living hold their tongues. Luke understood why Noa chose to not speak about what she had endured.

Emily Gallagher’s face haunted him. He remembered her face from the ensuing media reports after her rescue. How had he not realised it was her, his Noa?

Two-and-a-half-years was a long time and Noa had changed the colour of her hair and the style. The faces of the homicide victims Luke had sought justice for must’ve overshadowed the face of a survivor. That’s what Luke told himself to stop dwelling on how he’d not been able to see Emily Gallagher when looking at Noa Morgan.

Luke stared at the wall separating the kitchen and dining room. The extent of Noa’s rage, fear and pain was evident by the missing chunks of plaster and brick.

Never before had Luke felt so torn. He wanted to walk up the stairs and make love to her; the intelligent, strong, brave and beautiful woman he craved. But Luke remained rooted in front of the fire.

How would Noa ever allow a man to touch her again?

How did he dare think of showing her what she meant to him when she was in the midst of hell? Noa deserved better.

War raged inside him. Luke stormed to the pantry with clenched fists.
