Torquil and the Padre were sitting down with a dram of Glen Corlin on either side of the fireplace in the sitting room of the manse watching the end of the Scottish TV news.

‘Will it take long to get the forensics evidence?’ Lachlan asked.

‘A day or two. Ralph is pretty sure that she received her head injury before ending up in the water. The bloodstained bottle looks pretty damning, but until we have the clear match we can’t say any more than that it was suspicious. I’ve reported it to the procurator fiscal and a fatal accident inquiry will be called. I just wish...’

His mobile phone went off and he saw Lorna’s number flashing.

‘Hi, darling, I am guessing that you saw the news?’ he asked.

‘I did, my love. And I bet the boss did, too. You had better be prepared for a call.’

‘You are wondering why I haven’t been more specific and declared it a murder inquiry?’

‘No, I understand why not. That won’t be the boss’s gripe either. He’ll want to know why you agreed to do television before you talked to him.’

The landline phone started to ring. ‘Shall I get it, laddie?’ Lachlan asked.

Torquil shook his head. ‘Sorry, Lorna,’ he said into his mobile. ‘You couldn’t have been more right. He’s on the blower right now, I think. Bye.’

He picked up the landline and winced at the torrent of invective that rushed from Superintendent Lumsden’s lips.

‘And good evening to you, Superintendent,’ he replied. ‘What exactly can I do for you?’
