With fifteen minutes to spare before his next panel discussion, this one about pensions, Father Gilbert sat at the conference café to have a cup of tea. He tried to collect his thoughts – not about pensions, but about the questionable, perhaps stupid, idea of arranging to have Veronyka meet him.

Just as he began to talk himself out of it, Father Anthony Reagan sat down across from him.

“I’m sorry to bother you,” Father Anthony said. “Have you heard from Vadim?”

“No. But I’ve been wondering about him all day. He came to Englesea and then disappeared.”

“I only just discovered a voice-message from him.” He brought out his mobile as if it was evidence to back his story. “Vadim said his mobile phone had been stolen and he wasn’t able to call you. He rang from a payphone. He was afraid someone was following him. And then the message cut off. I’m worried. Can you have your friend with the police check on him?”

“Detective Inspector Gwynn has been busy with other cases. A man looking for his daughter won’t be a priority.”

“What can we do?” Father Anthony asked. He stroked at his beard. “Vadim isn’t in danger, is he?”

Father Gilbert hoped not. “If he made himself known to whoever is running the operation, they may not like him snooping around.”

“Are you convinced it is an operation?”

“Something is wrong there.”

Father Anthony closed his eyes and frowned. Father Gilbert suspected he was offering up a short prayer. “What happens next?” he asked, then opened his eyes again.

“I have an idea – and you just helped me decide whether I should do it or not.”

“What’s your idea?”

The question gave him pause. “It’s better if I don’t say. But I’ll let you know what I find out.”
