Chapter 42

Orville sat at his workstation and crammed potato chips into his mouth, the crumbs falling on to his keyboard as he scanned the email he’d received from Mark.

Mr. Wayward,

I’m sorry to bother you again, but I’d like to follow up on the data request I sent previously. We’re still seeing concerning trends in the clinical outcomes for patients on government health insurance programs. I’ve also spoken to a colleague at another academic center, and they seem to have a similar issue. I’ve sent you my analytic files and hope you’ve had a chance to take a look. Perhaps if you and I could—

“You are becoming a pain in the ass, Quinn. I told you not to expect a response from me anytime soon, and here you are, already asking for more!” He moved Mark’s email to a file titled, “PITA.” “I’m sure it’s you medical schmucks who are causing all the problems to begin with. Now, you want my help to fix your screwups.”

Then again, maybe this would be a good case to use to test out his new AI analytic program... Let it figure out what was going on...what the real root causes were for what Quinn claimed to be seeing.

Orville glanced warily over his shoulder then opened a password-protected file only he had access to. He’d been constantly refining the advanced medical AI software to make it even more effective. Orville sent Mark’s data file to his private server where he had the AI housed then typed instructions for the analytic approach he wanted the AI to take.

He sat back in his chair and crossed his arms over his belly as he watched the AI software grab Mark’s data and start manipulating it at a speed that impressed even Orville. Jeez! Not even someone as smart as me can keep up with this! Orville minimized the screen in case someone walked past and went back to his usual work, barely able to focus on what CMS employed him to do.

After about five minutes, a message box appeared on his screen, announcing that the AI had completed its analysis. Caught off guard, Orville fumbled to remove the notification from his monitor.

“Holy shit! Already?” he mumbled. “That was fast!”

He scooted closer to his monitor, hunching over it to block it from view of any passers-by, then opened the results file. He traced his finger over the screen, his brow furrowing deeper as he looked at more and more of the findings.

“What the hell?” he yelled then hurriedly slapped a palm over his mouth and glanced around. “That can’t be right!” He quickly opened the original data set he’d received from Mark and put it on his screen side-by-side with the file he’d received back from the AI. What? No wonder the output was screwed up—the input data had been changed! How the hell...?

He spun around and glared at the nearby cubicles of coworkers then shook his head slowly. No. There’s no way one of those bozos could have gotten into my AI server.
