Chapter Sixteen

“Pan!” I exclaim.

“How did you get in here?” Riley asks. “We have the whole place locked down with perimeter spells.”

Pan rolls his vivid green eyes. “Please. I just wanted to do you the courtesy of stopping by to let you know I’d heard of your little investigation, and I can’t help you.”

I narrow my eyes. “Why not?”

“Well, I’m a bit flummoxed as to why you thought I could be of assistance in the first place.”

“Um, probably because you’re a god and you know other gods and…” I pause, realizing the kids are all listening with rapt attention. I shoot Riley a pointed look and he herds them all inside to a chorus of groans.

When the door is shut, I turn back to Pan. “As I was saying, this whole thing with Death and her sister is about gods, or beings of god-like power, trying to start a war and wreck the universe. I figured you must know something about it, or have contacts who can help.”

“Dearest Quinn, I make every attempt to keep my nose out of business that bores me. And quite frankly, I could care less about Death and Fate having it out and nixing the whole universe.” Pan stares down at his silver cane and twirls it slowly in circles against the concrete.

“Really? A whole universe getting destroyed isn’t worth even a bit of your attention? I would think you’d be grabbing a bag of popcorn to watch the whole thing go down.”

Pan shrugs. “I suppose I might when it comes down to it. It’ll depend on my mood that day. What else is happening, you know?”

I’m not sure whether to laugh or strangle him. “I’m not going to take no for an answer, Pan. Just tell me what you want in order to get on board with this. I know Faeries can’t resist a deal.”

Pan feigns an aghast expression, pressing one hand to his heart. “Not going to take no for an answer? Well, I’m positively terrified!” He waggles his fingers at me. “But you’ll have to find me first.”

And the prick disappears in another shower of green sparks.

“God damn it!” We need Pan, as much as I loath to admit it. I have to get him on my side.

Riley pops his head out the front door. “Pan being Pan?”

“Um, yeah. You could say that.” I sigh. “But I’ll worry about him later.”

“That’s right. You have a date with sexy woodsman warlock. No worries about anything else tonight.”

I take a deep, calming breath. “Okay. Be back in a bit.”

I get in the SUV and drive into town. It helps me calm down from my encounter with Pan. Before long I locate Wine Down. It’s in a strip of shops sandwiched between a bait and tackle shop and an ice cream parlor. I take a final glance in the mirror, freshen my lipstick even though it doesn’t need freshening, and head inside.

I’m not expecting much, so I’m surprised by its charm. The overhead lighting is dim, giving the place a cozy atmosphere.
