Chapter 6

Ian was eerily silent as we drove into town.

And I used that quiet time to fret over whether or not I was doing the right thing.

What if he hated being in public?

What if he didn’t eventually relax?

What if people did stare?

After all, he was Ian Blackwood. I had no doubt folks would look just because they’d never seen their wealthiest resident out in public.

I willed my body to relax as I pointed to something along our route and said, “There’s the shell museum. I’ve always wanted to go there.”

My mother and I had done the things we could manage for free on the island. We’d never had the extra money to wander through the museum full of shells, even though we would have both loved to go.

“You haven’t been there?” he asked, his voice not as tense as it had been at the house.

“Never,” I confessed. “I love to hunt shells, and I’m in shell hunter’s heaven on your beach. I’ve found some great stuff. But Mom and I never had the entrance fee to go to the museum.”

I hadn’t been able to keep the regret out of my voice, even though I’d tried. I wouldn’t trade the time I’d had with my mother for anything, but I wished she’d lived longer, long enough for me to start making a decent income and treating her to places we’d never been able to afford.

“You could go now,” he mentioned.

I shrugged. “It’s not the same, going alone. And Ariel, my best friend, isn’t interested in shells. It kind of sucks when there’s nobody to share it with.”

Maybe someday, I would hit the museum. But it wasn’t high on my to-do list now that I had a job. I needed my own vehicle first. And no matter what Ian said, I had to vacate his residence eventually. I was saving as much money as possible.

“What else do you like to do here?” he asked, his voice sounding genuinely curious.

“I don’t do a lot because I haven’t gotten my own vehicle yet,” I explained. “I feel guilty driving your Jeep. But I always hit the farmer’s market. They have great produce and veggies.”

Unlike Ian, my provisions didn’t show up like magic. I had to make some occasional trips for food, even though I ate dinner with him most of the time.

“The vehicle is yours to use whenever you want,” he rumbled.

I turned my head to look at him, but his face was impassive. “It’s not mine, Ian. It’s yours. Because of your generosity, I’ve survived this rough patch in my life. But I eventually want to buy my own car. I need to find my own place. I’m saving as much as I can right now.”

“I’ll pay you more,” he offered huskily.

“No,” I said, appalled. “You already pay me an incredibly generous salary. And I feel like I’m the lucky one to be learning so much from you. Do you know how many people would love to work directly with you?”

He let out something that sounded like a cynical laugh.
