WHILE MOST FAMILIES were opening gifts, spending time with family, and eating an amazing Christmas dinner, Nadia’s household was in a frenzy of activity, trying to prepare for the gala the mayor was throwing for Bayside’s most exclusive residents. Nadia tried to avoid her mother and stepfather as she walked into the house. Assistants were everywhere: one going this way, another going that.

“Hold it right there, missy,” her mother called after her as she slithered her way up the huge staircase to her room.

Nadia turned back, glancing over the banister at her mother below. “Yes, Mother? What is it now?”

“Aren’t you going to help? Where’ve you been anyway?”

“I went for a run and grabbed coffee with a friend.”

“Oh, who? Mattie, or someone you might actually be able to date?” Her mother did this fake laugh she did all the time that just made Nadia’s skin crawl.

“Actually, she’s my date for tonight, if you must know.”

“Oh? And does she have a name?” The mayor was super nosy, but Nadia knew at least that her mother didn’t have a problem with her dating women.

“Of course, she has a name.” Nadia grinned and headed up the stairs, sure she’d left her mother with her mouth wide-open in disbelief. Nadia wanted it to be a surprise and knew that since Kalli was from a prominent Bayside family her mother would probably approve.

She had seven hours and nothing to do but worry about tonight. As she was about to lie down and turn on Netflix, there was a knock at her door. Before she could say to come in, the door opened and in walked Mattie. “Hey, bitch! I’m here.” Seeing the look of shock on Nadia’s face, he said, “I thought we were getting ready together. Aren’t we?” He set down all his typical going out preparations, pulled out a bottle of Moscato and two glasses, and plopped down on Nadia’s bed.

Nadia laughed. “Of course, we’re getting ready together, but damn, it’s early.” She grabbed the glass he poured for her and started to sip.

“This is the pre-party, gurl! We get to turn it up and get ready to deal with these bougie folks.” Mattie’s parents were quite influential in Bayside as well. However, he had only been here for five years, so he was still navigating the upper-class waters. He often referred to the upper crust as “bougie” to mean the upper class that thinks they’re better than the rest. “So? How did it go last night?”

“Ha! Maybe I should ask you that question. You straight-up disappeared on me.”

“Yeah,” he said with a pouty look on his face. “There was a fine waiter who needed waiting on.” He laughed and threw his head back. “But seriously, how’d it go with, um, what’s her name?”

“Her name is Kalli and it went fine.” Nadia left it like that. She wasn’t one to kiss and tell, not even to Mattie, who was her best friend.

“Mmhmm. That’s all I’m gonna get, huh?”

Nadia nodded and held her glass out for a refill.
