âIâve never seen lemonade be so stubborn,â Betsy was saying as they went down the walk. âYouâd think it would be fine, but it lifts the color out and if you donât take care of it quick â¦â
Beryl smiled. Betsy and Cecil walked behind her and Ephraim, holding hands. A part of her wished Ephraim would take her hand, but that would be silly. Wasnât it enough to have her arm linked with his? But hand-holding said something different. It said you were together.
Did she want to be together with Ephraim Stone? He was certainly attractive, intelligent, attentive and forthright. He also wasnât interested in her. She did her best not to sigh at that.
âItâs a lovely evening, donât you think?â he asked her.
âMade lovelier by leaving the Vandersâ home.â
He smiled. âCome now â Mayor Vander and his wife arenât that bad.â
âI wasnât referring to them and you know it.â
He glanced at her. âDonât let him get to you. It will do you no good to stew over the manâs abhorrent behavior.â
âArenât you?â
âNo. I do not stew. Bad for the heart.â
She laughed. âNeither do I, now that you mention it.â
âI can see that. You boil.â
âThatâs true.â She laughed again and glanced over her shoulder. âBetsy and Cecil have stopped.â
âOf course.â
Her face twisted up in confusion. Were they looking at something? There was nothing special about the street they were on â some nice houses and lovely trees, but nothing out of the ordinary. âWhat is it?â
Ephraim was smiling. âTheyâre giving us a chance to get ahead so I can steal a kiss.â
She gasped. âWhat? Theyâre supposed to be chaperoning.â
His shoulders shook with laughter. âExactly.â
âOh, my goodness,â she said as they started walking again. âIs that why they were so happy to come along? To see you kiss me?â
âBetsy likes a good kiss as much as the next woman.â
âYes, but sheâs not the one getting kissed ⦠oh.â Beryl looked and, sure enough, the older couple was kissing. âOh, my.â
Ephraim smiled, patted her hand and they were off again.
âAre you sure we shouldnât be chaperoning them?â
âNo, theyâre fine. Besides, theyâll catch up eventually.â
âEventually? What happens when theyâre supposed to be truly chaperoning?â
âThey are. But they donât know weâre not really â¦â He waved between them.
She heard a hint of disappointment in his voice and her belly flipped. Or did she just imagine it? Maybe Katie was right, and the man did like her a little.
It wasnât long before theyâd reached the hotel, but Beryl could no longer find Betsy and Cecil. âWe lost them.â
Ephraim smiled. âNo, theyâre around somewhere. Probably canoodling in a dark corner â¦â
She giggled. âYouâre horrible.â
âNo, I just know Betsy and Cecil.â He let go of her arm and faced her. âBeryl â¦â
Her lips parted and her heart raced. Oh, good heavens, she wanted him to kiss her! She bit her lip. âHmm?â
He leaned toward her. âIâm going to help you â¦â
âEphraim?â Her heart was thundering in her chest. Maybe she liked him a little too.
Ephraim came closer and her lips parted.
